The Church of Almighty God or Eastern Lightning
Prabin Kalita, August 22, 2020: The Times of India
Christian-majority Nagaland is in a tizzy over a banned Chinese cult allegedly making inroads into the state, prompting the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) to caution its affiliates about a “well-organised attempt” to use social media to propagate “false gospel”.
In a note to all Baptist associations, NBCC general secretary Dr Zelhou Keyho said they should do everything possible to “shield” the faithful from the cult, which calls itself “The Church of Almighty God or Eastern Lightning”. The NBCC says the cult teaches that Jesus was resurrected as a woman named Yang Xiangbin and that the New Testament had been replaced by a rewritten Bible. NBCC Youth Secretary Vikuo Rhi told TOI, “We know that they have already entered Nagaland and northeast India.” Church leaders estimate that the cult currently has 400-500 followers in Nagaland.
