SC orders 30 grace marks in exam that only 9/ 1200 cleared

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the Punjab and Haryana high court to award 30 grace marks to each of the nearly 1,200 candidates who had cleared the preliminary examination and appeared for the main examination for selection of civil judges (junior division).

The decision to award 20 grace marks in civil law paper-I and 10 marks in civil law paper-II was taken by a bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices B R Gavai and Surya Kant after candidates complained that the papers were so tough that only nine out of 1,200 candidates could clear the main examination to be eligible for the interview even though 109 posts of civil judges were notified.

Taking into account the report of retired SC judge A K Sikri about the difficult written examination, the bench said, “The Punjab and Haryana HC through its registrar general is directed to award 20 grace marks in civil law-I paper and 10 grace marks in civil law-II paper to all the candidates of 2019 examination and prepare fresh results of the main (written) examination of civil judge (junior division) within two weeks and complete the selection process within four weeks thereafter.

“The entire selection process shall be completed in all respects before February 15, 2020. Left out vacant posts along with vacancies which have occurred meanwhile and those anticipated within next six months will be advertised as early as possible and filled in accordance with the timeline prescribed by the SC in Malik Mazhar Sultan case.”
