2017: Mass grave discovered

Vineet Upadhyay, Discovery of 300 U'khand graves draws tourists, May 12, 2017: The Times of India

The discovery of 40 human skeletons and 300 `grave-like structures' in Gaulapar area of Haldwani near Nainital has resulted in the spot turning into a tourist attraction overnight with hundreds of people turning up to catch a glimpse of the mysterious find.

The skeletons were unearthed a week ago while the construction work on the Inter State Bus Terminal was on but the findings were made public. The discovery had sent the state into a tizzy with CM Trivendra Singh Rawat assuring the public of a probe.

There is speculation that the remains go back more than a century and half. Some historians have said the graves may belong to Rohilla tribesmen who had fought against the British in the 1857 Revolt and suffered heavy casualties.
