BJP wins
May 24, 2019: The Times of India
The Modi wave blew away disorganised Congress in Himachal Pradesh as BJP registered a clean sweep by winning all four seats again with huge margins, ranging from nearly 5 lakh to 3 lakh votes.
With 72.25% polling recorded in Himachal — the highest turnout in parliamentary polls in the state — the BJP candidates were off the block as soon as counting started on Thursday morning. This is the first time in the history of Himachal Pradesh when a party has managed to register a clean sweep in two consecutive parliamentary elections. BJP’s landslide victory has come as a big boost for chief minister Jai Ram Thakur and will also ensure his acceptance as a mass leader like his predecessors Virbhadra Singh and Prem Kumar Dhumal. Thakur travelled across the state to campaign for party candidates, as Dhumal and Shanta Kumar mainly focused on Hamirpur and Kangra, respectively.
BJP worked hard for the campaign and contested as a united force, while infighting among Congress leaders marred the party’s campaign in every seat. Though Congress tried its hand by bringing former Union minister Sukh Ram back into the party and giving ticket to his grandson for Mandi seat, but Virbhadra’s statement against Sukh Ram sent wrong signals down the line. Mandi has been a Congress bastion but BJP has now made the seat its stronghold.
In Mandi, people largely voted for PM Narendra Modi and CM Thakur even when there was discontent against BJP candidate Ramswaroop Sharma for failing to ensure development. Many felt that failure of senior Congress leaders to unite has resulted in the defeat of its candidates.
