Srivardhan

Town in the State of Janjira, Bombay, situated in 18° 4' N. and 73° 4' E., about 12 miles south of Janjira village. It appears in the writings of early European travellers as Ziffardan. Population (1901), 5,961. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, under Ahmadnagar and afterwards under Bijapur, Srivardhan was a port of consequence. It has still a considerable trade, which consists chiefly of betel-nuts of a superior kind, highly valued at Bombay. An annual fair is attended by about 3,000 persons. The income of the municipality is about Rs. 3,000.
