[edit] A first, woman Army officer jailed for graft

Times of India

Chandigarh: For the first time in the history of the Indian Army, a retired woman officer was on Thursday sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment and stripped of her military honours by a general court martial that held her guilty of corruption.

Major Dimple Singla, 37, had retired in 2007 after completing a 10-year short service stint. As a judge advocate general branch officer in Army, she was on trial for accepting Rs 10,000 for favouring an accused during his GCM in 2004. In another case, she was accused of violating good order and discipline under the Army Act when she suggested the name of a defence lawyer to the accused Havildar Chandran, who was facing a GCM in Dehradun in 2006.

In the same case, she was accused of improperly visiting Captain Kumud Maini, a defence officer in Chandran’s case, asking him not to divulge any information to the press regarding the GCM.

During the course of her court martial, Singla was arrested on February 1 this year by Army authorities as she was not attending the GCM proceedings. She was later released on the orders of Armed Forces Tribunal. Immediately after the verdict by the GCM, Singla was taken into custody by Army authorities.
