The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has opened city’s tallest fountain in the heart of the capital. Constructed in the middle of 1.75-acre Windsor Place roundabout, opposite Hotel Le Meridien, the fountain is 75-foot high, said an NDMC official.

“The facility has been developed on the advice of the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC). Though officially its height is 75 feet but it can go up to 90 feet,” a senior NDMC official said, adding that 20% of the land of the roundabout is being used to develop the fountain.

There are six other fountains as well, each measuring 45 feet in height, constructed around the area.

“To make the place look more attractive, we are developing the landscape with colourful flowering plants, benches, uplighters for trees and pebble stones. And soon, colourful RGB LEDs will illuminate the fountain in the evening and give it pleasant aesthetic,” NDMC chairperson Naresh Kumar said.

“We have imported RGB LEDs from China and as soon as we get the lot supplied, installation process will start. While these lights can function automatically, we will also have the option of fixing timers,” said Kumar.

The official added that the place has already started getting heavy footfall, especially in the evenings when weather is pleasant. “In fact, the fountain has already become selfie point for visitors,” said NDMC official.

The fountains, officials said, will be operational for three hours each in the morning (between 9am to 12pm) and evening (between 6pm to 10pm).

“Earlier a small fountain was built here, but it became defunct due to the lack of water supply. We decided to refurbish the place completely after consulting DUAC,” said another NDMC official.

For easy access to the place, the municipal council will also construct a gateway to the fountain at the round-about from all sides.

The agency has also opened two other fountains at Kautilya Marg and Jalebi Park near North Block this month. “These fountains were scheduled to be inaugurated but due to implementation of model code of conduct, there was no inauguration,” said official.

“Unlike Windsor roundabout, the fountains are only 30-foot in height. But we have made place more attractive by planting colourful seasonal flowers and decorative lights,” said an NDMC official.
