BEST FILM

2 States

Haider

Mary Kom

PK

Queen

2 States: Film adaptation of the popular Chetan Bhagat novel by the same name, 2 States managed to floor the critics as well as mint money at the ticket windows. Produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by Abhishek Varman, the film featured Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. A romantic-comedy, the film deals with the trial and tribulations that an Indian couple has to go through to get married, if they belong to different states. The chemistry between the film's lead pair helped the film garner attention and the chartbuster album kept the cash registers jingling.

Haider: The third and final film in Vishal Bharadwaj's trilogy of Shakespearean tragedies, Haider, opened to rave reviews. The film is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. Shahid Kapoor steals the show with a power-packed performance in the lead role. Besides his performance, Tabu's act as Haider's mother and Shraddha Kapoor's portrayal of Haider's love interest, are also noteworthy.

Mary Kom: The film was in discussion for a long time prior to its release. The biographical sports-drama was based on the life of 5-time female World Boxing Champion and Olympic bronze medalist, Mary Kom. Priyanka Chopra stepped into the shoes of the champion boxer with elan. Her portrayal fetched her many accolades. Produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and directed by Omung Kumar, the biopic was appreciated by the critics for its accuracy. The box-office figures of the film also seemed encouraging.

PK: Rajkumar Hirani's PK managed to surprise both the critics and the audience with its subject that dealt with religion. The film's content was deemed too controversial by certain sections of the society who demanded the film be banned across the nation. However, the controversy only seemed to have benefited the Aamir Khan-Anushka Sharma-starrer. PK smashed all previously created box-office records and is still going strong at the ticket windows. Aamir Khan's portrayal of an alien from another planet also fetched him acclaim.

Queen: Kangana Ranaut's Queen was a surprise hit. The film narrated the story of a girl dealing with her break-up by going alone on her honeymoon. While the story sounds simple enough, it was the execution that garnered accolades. Not only was the film appreciated by the critics, it was also cheered for by the audience who rooted for Rani throughout the film. Kangana's act as the bumbling simpleton from Rajouri Garden can easily be called her best till date. Produced by Phantom films and directed by Vikas Bahl, Queen, that was a Women's Day release worked well with the Indian audience.

BEST DIRECTOR

Abhishek Varman - 2 States

Anurag Kashyap - Ugly

Rajkumar Hirani - PK

Vikas Bahl - Queen

Vishal Bhardwaj - Haider

Vikas Bahl for Queen: Queen was not only refreshing but also one of the best films to release in 2014. Kangana Ranaut stole the show with her performance and director Vikas Bahl was lauded for his direction. Revolving around Rani (Kangana Ranaut), the film explores her journey to discover her true identity and experience a new found independence through her travels on her honeymoon, sans her husband who ditched her before the two are set to tie the knot.

Rajkumar Hirani for PK: This one comes as no surprise. Aamir Khan and Raju Hirani's combination first created waves at the box-office with the 2009 film, 3 Idiots. It swept all the major awards that year. The duo repeated history with their 2014 offering, PK. The film made headlines for various reasons and was also mired in controversy for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of people. But inspite of this, the film has become the highest-grosser in Bollywood. Rajkumar Hirani has once again weaved magic at the box-office and it remains to be seen if he will walk away with the Black Lady.

Anurag Kashyap for Ugly: What comes as a pleasant surprise is Anurag Kashyap's nomination under the Best Director category for the film, Ugly. This drama-thriller was screened at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and was lauded for its content. Ugly has also been appreciated by the Hindi film fraternity for its stark portrayal of ugly relationships and human greed. TV actors, Rahul Bhat and Abir Goswami (last film appearance before his demise in 2013) stole the show along with Ronit Roy and Tejaswini Kolhapure. Anurag also released his movie one week after PK's release, which was a challenge for the director but he remained undeterred. Though the film did not fare well at the box-office, the industry took notice of the fact and Anurag has thus been nominated.

Vishal Bhardwaj for Haider: Known for his Shakespearean adaptations, Vishal Bharadwaj's Haider is loosely based on the playwright's great work, Hamlet. Set against the backdrop of Kashmir, director Bhardwaj has infused multiple themes very cleverly in the film, giving it an Indian milieu. From the plight of the Kashmiris, to half-widows and disappeared people, Haider won the hearts of critics and is considered as one of Shahid's best performance till date.

Abhishek Varman for 2 States: Abhishek made his Bollywood debut with this romantic comedy, based on Chetan Bhagat's best-selling novel by the same name. Starring Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, the film did well at the box-office and both the actors were appreciated for their performances. A love story of two people from culturally different backgrounds, 2 States explores their relationship with each other and their families. In the end, all's well that ends wells as both the warring families agree to Krish (Arjun Kapoor) and Ananya Swaminathan's (Alia Bhatt) wedding. Abhishek's film has beaten others to be nominated. Giving it stiff competition will be other noteworthy films.

Tabu - Haider

Amrita Singh for 2 States Karan Johar's 2 States starring Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt is based on Chetan Bhagat's novel. Amrita Singh smartly pulled off the role of a loud Punjabi lady in the film. As Kavita, she convinces the audience with her dislike for South Indians. Before quitting acting in the year 1993, Amrita Singh had won the Best Supporting Actress Award for her portrayal of Roma Mathur in the film, Aaina. She was nominated for Kalyug in 2002 and has been nominated in the same category, once again. Hope history repeats itself.

Dimple Kapadia for Finding Fanny Homi Adajania and and Dinesh Vijan's Finding Fanny took Dimple Kapadia back to Goa after her debut in Rishi Kapoor-starrer Bobby. The film had managed to make Dimple Kapadia a sex symbol at the age of 16 while her character in Finding Fanny made her 'Boba,' as claimed by Dimple in an interview with The Times Of India. Dimple Kapadia had won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for Bobby and Sagar in the '80s, followed by two more Filmfare Awards over the years. This year she has been nominated under the Best Supporting Actress Award category for Finding Fanny. Will she take away her 5th Black Lady?

Lisa Haydon for Queen Lisa Haydon's character, Vijayalakshmi from the movie, Queen, was liked and appreciated by the audience. Her character Vijayalakshmi is a free-spirited woman of French-Spanish-Indian descent, who works at a hotel. This is the first time that Lisa has been nominated for a Filmfare Award. We wish her all the best!

Juhi Chawla for Gulaab Gang In an interview with Karan Johar on his TV show, Koffee With Karan, Juhi Chawla had revealed that she did Gulaab Gang just because Madhuri was in it. Juhi Chawla imbibed the mannerism and dressing style of leading women politicians like Sonia Gandhi, Sushma Swaraj and Mamata Banerjee for her role in the film. The actress who is usually seen in a bubbly avatar took on the rather gray role as a challenge. Juhi Chawla has received 9 Filmfare Awards till date and we really hope she makes it 10 this year!

Tabu for Haider Tabu has experimented with various characters in Bollywood. She has played a doting mother, a girlfriend and even a prostitute in her films. She holds 4 Filmfare Awards under the category of Best Actress in Critic and one Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut for the film, Vijaypath. She has once again been nominated under the category of Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in Haider.
