As Covid disrupted economic activities severely, the last two years saw agriculture’s share increase in India’s GVA, a yardstick of all economic activity in a state. But data for the period from 2011-12 to 2019-20 (the fi nancial year before Covid) reveals that manufacturing’s share in GVA had been slipping even earlier in many states.

India has overtaken the US to become the second-most sought-after manufacturing destination globally, driven mainly by cost competitiveness, according to real estate consultant Cushman & Wakefield. China is at No. 1, the consultant said in its 2021 Global Manufacturing Risk Index, which assessed the most advantageous sites among 47 nations in Europe, Americas & Asia-Pacific.
