The usual, the novel, the upcoming and the exciting jostled for space on an art calendar packed with activity. Recording a medley of strains, the year 2006, saw the finer arts branching in several directions, but the spread was largely lateral with few, if any, vertical inclines.
Thesis shows
Harbingers of new wave art -- annual degree shows like the the Indus Valley Thesis Show and Emerging Talents at VM gallery are now the new venues for talent scouting.
Young at art
Ushering in the new, young radicals are giving new meaning to the practice of art making. A host of new artists were also offered The Vasl Residency (local and international) experience.
A solo video exhibition by Bani Abidi followed later in the year by the mega video event 256 Shades. This finally brought the video genre out of the closet.

Exhibitions like The Body and Calligraphy show and Karachi 6/6 .. The Labyrinth gave new meaning to old issues through mixed media, installation, collaboration and performance … it also brought the much wanted new curators to the fore.
