Controversy's favourite child: In an interview to Simi Garewal some time back, actor Sanjay Dutt had said that he does not remember any phase in his life where there were no problems. From drugs to alleged connection with the underworld to court cases, Sanjay Dutt's life has been mired with controversies. Hailing from a blue blood family of the film industry- the son of superstars Sunil Dutt and Nargis - Sanjay Dutt is known more for his controversies than his career. Let us take a recap at some of the controversies related to the actor.

Drunk MMS clip: Sanjay Dutt, who has been criticised for misusing his star status to get repeated parole and parole extension, has been slammed after a lengthy MMS clip featuring the actor in high spirits and talking about his colleagues from the film industry has been leaked. It is said that the actor partied and even conducted business while he was out on parole on the pretext of personal medical grounds and later his wife Maanyata's poor health. The Bombay High Court questioned the parole extension for the actor as he was out from December 21 last year to March 21 this year.

Drug abuse: It is said that when Sanjay Dutt was young he found it difficult to handle the pressure of being the son of superstar couple- Sunil Dutt and Nargis. It is said the actor started taking drugs when he was just in high school. And when his mother died, shortly before the release of his first film in 1981, his problem worsened. Also when the actor spent five months in prison in late 1982 after being caught in possession of illegal substances, he became depressed and allegedly started taking drugs. Upon his release he spent two years in the United States, the majority of which was spent in a Texas rehab clinic, before returning to India and resuming his career. The actor also was in the news due to a bitter custody battle he was fighting with his late wife Richa Sharma's family for daughter Trishala. However, he lost the case.

Affair with Madhuri Dixit: Sanjay Dutt's affair with the gorgeous actress Madhuri Dixit came under the scanner as he was already married to Richa Sharma. The two were working together in several films and were very charmed with each other. It is said their fondness for each other grew on the sets of Saajan. However, Madhuri's father was against this relationship as Sanjay was already married to Richa Sharma. Richa was battling cancer in the US and Madhuri lent Sanjay a friendly shoulder during this difficult time. They would often spend hours with each other. However, as per rumours, the gorgeous actress dumped him when Sanjay was arrested in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts.

Illegal possession of arms: Just as Sanjay Dutt had began to move on in his life after his first wife's passing away, a series of bomb attacks rocked Mumbai in 1993 and killed 257 people. The actor was found in possession of illegal weapons. The arms were allegedly part of the main consignment used in the blasts. Though Dutt was cleared of all conspiracy charges related to the blast, he was sentenced to six years in jail by a TADA court in July 2007. He was found guilty of illegally keeping arms, including an AK-56 rifle. The Supreme Court had handed a five-year jail sentence to actor. The actor was convicted under the Arms Act while he escaped conviction under the stricter TADA.

The underworld connection: If this was not enough trouble for the actor, Sanjay Dutt was investigated for alleged money-laundering deals between the Mumbai underworld and Bollywood. An audio tape of an alleged conversation between the actor and Chhota Shakeel, the Bombay underworld don, found a lot of mention in the media in 2001. Apart from speaking about a co-star’s punctuality issues, nothing substantial could be deciphered from the tape. Chhota Shakeel, one of the most dreaded dons of the Mumbai underworld, has been accused of kidnapping, extortion and murder.

Sanjay Dutt's marriage to Manyata: After getting divorced from his second wife Rhea Pillai, Sanjay Dutt tied the knot with Manyata (Dilnawaz Sheikh) in 2008 amid many controversies. While some rumours claimed that Manyata was already pregnant with his children when the two married, others linked her to the Mumbai underworld. The two got married in a private ceremony in Goa. What was shocking was that Sanjay's sisters Namrata and Priya Dutt, who did not approve of her, did not attend his wedding. Manyata too has an ambiguous past. She was a small-time actress in B-grade movies. There were also rumours that she was already married to someone else when she tied the knot with Dutt, making her second marriage illegal. It is also said after her marriage to the actor, she became very possessive about him and cut him off from his friends- Kumar Gaurav, Suniel Shetty and Sanjay Gupta. In fact, there were allegations that she was responsible for the ouster of Sanjay's trusted secretary Kalim. She then took over his day-to-day affairs.

Sanjay Dutt vs Ameesha Patel: The actress was very close to the actor and his wife Manyata. However, things between them turned soured at Rohit Dhawan's wedding. Ameesha Patel apparently wore a revealing dress with a plunging neckline at Rohit Dhawan's sangeet ceremony, which seemed improper to Sanjay Dutt. He asked her to cover up. However, when the actress didn't oblige, he went on to drape her dupatta across her shoulder to make her look 'decent'. This infuriated the actress, who felt it was not his business to tell her how to dress. Later, the pretty actress also accused Sanjay of touching her inappropriately. This led to lot of tension between the Dutts and Ameesha.

1993: The Mumbai serial blasts case

What were the bomb blasts of March 12, 1993?

Twelve coordinated blasts within two hours on March 12, 1993 ravaged Mumbai, India's financial capital, killing 257 people and injuring more than 700.

Among the targets were the Bombay Stock Exchange, Air India Building at Nariman Point and hotels Sea Rock and Juhu Centaur.Property worth crores was destroyed in the explosions in which the deadly RDX explosive was used for the first time in the country.

The serial blasts were alleged to be a revenge attack for the demolition of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya in December 1992.

Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, Tiger Memon and his brother Ayub Memon are alleged to be the conspirators behind the Bombay serial blasts of 1993 and have been declared proclaimed offenders. Today, the Supreme Court said that the "management and conspiracy of the blasts was done by Dawood Ibrahim. It also said that Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI was involved in the blasts.

A TADA court had convicted 100 people; 11 of them were sentenced to death, another 20 given life terms.

Here is a complete timeline of Sanjay Dutt’s relationship with the law since his arrest in 1993.

Dutt was convicted to 5 years in prison

• April 19, 1993 – Sanjay Dutt was arrested under TADA and the Arms Act for his role in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

• May 5, 1993 – He was released on bail.

• July 4, 1994 – His bail was cancelled and he was re-arrested.

• November 4, 1993: Nearly eight months after the serial blasts, primary charge sheet running to more than 10,000 pages were filed against 189 accused including actor Sanjay Dutt.

• October 16, 1995: Sanjay Dutt granted bail by Supreme Court.

• November 2006 - The TADA court found Sanjay Dutt guilty under Arms Act but acquitted him under TADA.

• July 2007 – He was convicted and sentenced to six year jail term.

These are three of the dates that film star Sanjay Dutt would desperately want to forget.

On April 19, 1993, he was arrested in connection with the Mumbai serial blasts of March 12, 1993.

At 1530 IST on April 26, 1993, he gave a statement before Deputy Commissioner of Police Krishnalal Bishnoi. This statement kept him in jail for two years.

And now, a reported confession of Abu Salem on November 21 has left Dutt a very worried man. He is consulting top criminal lawyers on the various implications of Salem's reported confession.

Dutt's 1993 statement to the police is the key.

He withdrew the statement later and four out of five independent witnesses turned hostile in the TADA court.

What exactly did Sanjay Dutt say in that all-important statement?

I -- Sanjay Sunil Dutt; age: 34 years; occupation: film artist -- stay at 58, Pali Hill, Bandra Bombay- 60 with my father and two sisters.

I studied arts in Elphinstone college for a year before dropping out. After that, I took private acting classes before getting into movies in 1980. I have three valid licenses for firearms and possess three weapons as mentioned below:

1. 270 Bruno rifle.

2. .375 double barrel magnum.

3. 12 bore shotgun.

I purchased these weapons as I was fond of hunting. I normally go hunting with a friend of mine, Yusuf Nullwala, as he is an experienced hunter.

In December 1991, I had given dates to actor-producer Feroz Khan for his film Yalgar.

He took the entire unit to shoot in Dubai.

During one of the shoots, Khan introduced me to one Dawood Ibrahim.

He introduced me to his brother Anees during another shooting session. After that meeting, Anees used to visit us regularly during the shooting and also where we were staying.

One day, Dawood Ibrahim invited the entire unit for dinner at his residence.

I attended the party like other unit members.

There were many others in the party and we were introduced to Iqbal Mirchi, Sharad Shetty, Chota Rajan.

There were also many artistes from Pakistan. Since Anees used to frequent the sets, I got to know him quite well.

I also know the proprietors of Magnum Video Hanif Kadawala and Samir Hingora. I signed one of their films Sanam. Samir is the treasurer of IMPA (Indian Motions Pictures Association). Hanif and Samir used to come quite frequently to my house to discuss dates with my secretary.

My father is an active political worker of the Congress and has been elected as member of Parliament in the last Lok Sabha election from Bandra. He also takes lot of interest in social work.

During the recent riots (communal riots in the aftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition) my father has taken interest and organised aid for the riot victims with the film industry's help.

Many people from the industry, party and social organisations used to come home regularly to arrange for relief material.

During that period, we used to get anonymous threats over telephone. They threatened to kill or assault the males in the family and molest or rape my sisters.

Everybody in the family was frightened and was under great stress.

Also, my father was attacked twice -- when he visited Jogeshwari and Behrampura -- and branded a pro-Muslim person. Once, while my father was on a hunger strike at Hutatma Chawk, I got an anonymous threat on phone. I contacted the local police. However, no special protection was given to my father. That day, I coincidentally met an Army officer whom I knew.

I told him the above details and sought his help. He was kind enough to guard our house that night. Later, I casually mentioned the threats to a number of persons including Hanif Kadawala and Samir Hingora.

Hanif told me that if I wanted, he would make immediate arrangements to get an automatic weapon for me.

Initially I wasn't interested, but Hanif and Samir insisted that I get the weapon and I I agreed to do so. They said they would immediately provide me with one.

One day in January 1993, around 9 or 9:30 pm, Hanif and Samir came to my house along with a man by name Salem.

2000, November 14: Dutt’s controversial phone call from Nashik

Tapes reveal Shakeel’s plan to kill Hrithik| Jul 30, 2002 | IndiaTimes/ The Times of India wrote:

Karachi-based don Chhota Shakeel had planned to eliminate superstar Hrithik Roshan as far back as November 2000, according to [one interpretation of] the transcript of an alleged telephone conversation between Shakeel and several Bollywood personalities which was submitted by the Mumbai police to a special court here.

India Today cited a Police Interpretation of the same tape, and wrote, ‘Chikna refers to Abu Salem.’

The tape of the alleged conversation between Shakeel and actor Sanjay Dutt, film director Mahesh Manjrekar, and producers Harish Sughand and Sanjay Gupta was played in the special court of judge A.P. Bhangale who is hearing the case of film financier Bharat Shah, accused of links with the underworld under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

The police say that several film personalities are in regular touch with Shakeel and leak information to him on Bollywood activities. The alleged conversation was taped by the police on November 14, 2000, at about 10.36 p.m. from Dutt’s cellphone. The actor had stopped over at Hotel Taj in Nashik before visiting the Shirdi temple. The tapes have only now been produced before the court because of Shah’s ongoing trial. Shah was arrested on January 8, 2001, for his alleged links with Shakeel.

The trial was delayed, among other things, because the producer-financier moved the courts for bail on several occasions. He was finally granted bail by the supreme court earlier this year. Shah has also been accused of taking Shakeel’s help to produce the film ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’.

On detailed reading, the transcripts reveal that Mahesh Manjrekar offered to make a film on the life of Chhota Shakeel on the recommendation of Sanjay Dutt. Shakeel welcomed the move, and said he would fully cooperate in the venture.

Case: Possession of unauthorised firearms - at the peak of the Mumbai riots in 1993 - thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 3 (3) of the TADA Act, 1987. Also, the arms were kept in the notified area of Greater Mumbai.

Status: The trial in the case of the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai, which killed 257 people, maimed 713 and damaged property worth Rs 27 crore in Mumbai, has reached a conclusive stage. Of the 121 accused, including Sanjay, 39 are still in custody. The CBI has submitted its version. The defence argument is on and is likely to be completed by the end of August. The CBI will have a chance to rebut on legal points only. The final hearing is expected by December. The CBI has examined 684 witnesses in all in the designated TADA court. The prosecution recorded 12,000 pages of evidence before closing its case on September 27. A total of 2,500 documents were produced.

NEW DELHI, March 21 (Agencies): The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt's conviction in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case and sentenced him to five years imprisonment. Dutt, who has already served 18 months of his term in prison, has four weeks to surrender. The Supreme Court today also dismissed 1993 Mumbai blasts mastermind Yakub Memon's appeal against his death sentence even as it reduced the punishment of 10 other accused to life imprisonment from death sentence considering the fact that they have spent 20 years in jail. It also upheld life sentences awarded to 17 others.

The apex court said there is no case for probation to Dutt because of the gravity of the crime though the actor can still file a review petition. Dutt, who was convicted under the Arms Act for illegally possessing weapons, had been awarded six years imprisonment by the TADA (Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act) court. However, the apex court reduced the sentence from six years to five years. This effectively means that Dutt will be in jail for three years and six months as he has already undergone 18 months imprisonment.

"He will have to serve another three-and-a-half year sentence. We had prepared him for the same," Dutt's lawyer Satish Maneshinde told reporters. "We will wait for a copy of the Supreme Court judgement and then decide the further course of action," he said. "He is a strong man and will fight back."

In 2007, Dutt was cleared of conspiracy charges in the Mumbai serial blasts but was found guilty of illegal possession of an automatic rifle and a pistol.

The actor was the most high-profile among 100 people found guilty in the bombings trial. The 1993 Mumbai attacks were ordered by India's most wanted man, Dawood Ibrahim, police say. The court also came down heavily on Mumbai police and customs officers at all levels.

A TADA court had in 1993 awarded death sentence to 12 people, including Memon. One of them has passed away. The court had also sentenced 20 to life imprisonment and 46 others, including Dutt, were given varying terms of imprisonment.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had faced flak for not challenging the TADA court verdict acquitting Sanjay Dutt of charges under the TADA but convicting him under the Arms Act and sentencing him to six years imprisonment. However, in the course of the hearing of his appeal, the CBI had opposed the actor's plea challenging his conviction and sentencing.

A series of 13 car bomb blasts had ripped through Mumbai on March 12, 1993, resulting in the death of 257 people and injuries to 713. The locations that were targeted included fisherman's colony in Mahim Causeway, Zaveri Bazaar, Plaza Cinema, Century Bazaar, Katha Bazaar, Hotel Sea Rock, Sahar Airport, Air India building, Hotel Juhu Centaur, the Bombay Stock Exchange Building and the Passport Office.

Not linked to 1993 blasts: Dutt

In August 2012, Dutt told the Supreme Court that his offense of possessing a rifle and ammunition was not linked to the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. Appearing for the actor, senior counsel Harish Salve told the apex court bench of Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice B.S. Chauhan that he came to possess the weapon in September 1992 when his father Sunil Dutt and sisters were facing threats as the senior Dutt's help to Muslim victims annoyed some.

Salve said that the only caveat in putting Sanjay Dutt to trial under an anti-terror law was if there was any "inextricable linkage" between his possessing arms with the serial bomb blasts. He said that this was the least common denominator that could be used for seeing any such linkage. He said that there was no linkage between Dutt possessing a rifle and the 1993 bomb blasts. The court was told that Dutt had never met blasts accused Tiger Memon and all that he knew about him was hearsay from Samir Hingora in whose under-production film "Sanam" he was playing a role.

The senior counsel told this to the apex court hearing Dutt's appeal challenging his conviction under the Arms act and sentence of six years awarded to him. The actor's appeal challenging his conviction was being heard by the apex court. As Salve commenced the arguments, the court pointed out that there were objections that the "CBI filed appeal against all making an exception for Sanjay Dutt".

New Delhi: Actor Sanjay Dutt has been given a five-year sentence by the Supreme Court for illegal weapons possession in a case linked to the 1993 serial blasts that killed 257 people in Mumbai. The Supreme Court today said that the circumstances and nature of offence were so serious that the 53-year-old actor cannot be released on probation.

The court today ordered Mr Dutt to surrender within four weeks on the charge of possessing three automatic rifles and a pistol that had been supplied to him by men subsequently convicted in the bombings. (Read: 10-point cheat-sheet in the case).

Mr Dutt has maintained he knew nothing about the bomb plot and that he asked for the guns to protect his family after receiving threats during sectarian riots in Mumbai. (Read: How a gun changed Sanjay Dutt's life)

The Supreme Court today observed that evidence and materials perused by the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA) Court in 2007 against Mr Dutt was correct. (See case timeline)

In his confession upon his arrest in 1993, which he later retracted, the actor had said that mafia don Abu Salem visited his home in January that year with Samir Hingora and Hanif Kadawala, proprietors of Magnum Video and alleged close associates of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

The Supreme Court today confirmed the death sentence of Yakub Abdul Razak Memon in the case and commuted the death sentence of 10 others. While passing its verdict, the court said the "management and conspiracy of the blasts was done by Dawood Ibrahim and that Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI, was involved in the blasts. The court also commuted the death sentence of the 10 other convicts to life imprisonment today.
