How SRK’s Pathan father fell in love with his South Indian mother

Priya Gupta, TNN | Aug 4, 2013 [1]

Shah Rukh talks about how his Pathan father fell in love with his South Indian mother.

"My mother is from Andhra and lived in Karnataka and used to speak all four South languages. My grandfather was the Karnataka state chief engineer of Mangalore Port and was the first Oxford- educated engineer, who was highly respected. He designed and built the Mangalore Port. My grandfather once took his four daughters, eldest of whom was my mother, to Delhi for a visit. In those days, there were pillars at India Gate. They had an ice-cream in their car after which the car hit one of the pillars and overturned. My father was the cousin brother of General Shah Nawaz, who was the second-in-command to Subhash Chandra Bose (Mangal, Dhillon and Shah Nawaz were amongst the three biggest freedom fighters). My father and he were Pathans from Peshawar and would walk at India Gate in the evenings. Seeing the car overturned, they turned the car over and took my mother and her family to the hospital. My grandfather and my mother's three sisters became alright, but my mother lost her memory and needed matching blood. As luck would have it, my father's blood matched hers and he gave his blood to her. My grandmother (nani) surprisingly was pregnant at that time and thus, to not give her stress on the phone, my grandfather requested my father if he would go to Bangalore to give her the news about her family and my mother having lost her memory (a Pathan will often do that as my mom's family had no help in Delhi).

‘When he returned back from Bangalore, he would go everyday and look after this lady who had lost her memory and fell in love with her. My mom, coincidentally, was engaged at that time to someone else. He came to Bangalore and wanted to marry my mother. They were both Muslims and my grandparents agreed. I was born and brought up in Mangalore till the age of five. There were no men in my maternal side except my grandfather. My mother was the eldest daughter and my mausies had got married late. I, too, had an older sister, so I became the first boy in the family and my mom gave me for five years to be looked after by my grandmother, so I was brought up in Mangalore by my maternal aunts and my nani. In the fifth year, I think, she missed me a lot and took me back with her. So, I was brought up by women and spoke Kannada when I was small with the servants of the house. My maternal house is still in Toli Chowki, Hyderabad."

Personal glimpses

5 amazing aspects of Shah Rukh’s life you may not be aware of

The Times of India

Bollywood's King Khan whose 'Chennai Express' overhauled and swamped the Rs 100 crore club, once tried his hand at a small restaurant business in Dariya Ganj but couldn't succeed. Surprisingly, his first salary was Rs 50 which he earned by working as an usher at Pankaj Udhas's concert in Delhi. When he signed 'Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa' as an actor, he completed the entire film for Rs. 25,000 only. Even on the opening day, he sold this film's tickets at the booking window of a Mumbai cinema! SRK is scared of poverty as his parents died in debt.

Actor Vivek Vaswani is known as SRK's mentor in Bollywood. During his struggling days, Shah Rukh had no place to stay in Mumbai so he lived with Vivek, who later helped him to meet industry people and helped him to get into Yash Chopra’s camp. According to Vivek, he tried his best to push SRK out of his house but failed. However, he says whatever he may have done for him in the past, he did as a friend. “You do things for friends, simple, and hence it was nothing really too great. Anyone would have done what I did. I am proud to be his friend,” stated Vivek once in an interview.

Shah Rukh rose to fame by playing negative characters in [two of] his earlier films and even inspired his peers to play anti-hero roles. Interestingly, when ‘Baazigar’ released, everyone discouraged him saying that his career is over now in the industry. “Even my best well wishers told me you can’t be a hero again since you’ve killed a woman. But it paid off. In the long run, everything is sustainable, if you stick to it,” said Shah Rukh. No doubt, the film left many Indian viewers shocked because it didn't adhere to the typical Bollywood formula. Nonetheless, the film raked in huge moolah and SRK again came out a winner.

Shah Rukh is very particular about his fashion and lifestyle. Known for having a classy sense of style, he prefers wearing black. “It's easier since no one can tell if I am repeating a garment. I have a fetish about the fit of my jeans and the clothes I sleep in. They have to be of a certain material. Also, as soon as I have worn my jeans after a bath, I wear my shoes and socks. I don’t take them off till I am in bed. I never wear slippers. My feet should always be covered. Sometimes even when I am lying on the bed, I wear shoes.” He likes to match his socks with his shoes not with his trousers. He even makes sure that his pyjamas are freshly ironed every night because as he says you never know who you might meet in your dreams!

Shah Rukh has a great fetish for numerology. All of his cars have the registered number 555 as he is very superstitious about it and believes it brings him good luck. Even his personal email id also contains the number 555. Not only do his personal mobile numbers have the combination of 555 and 40 but wife Gauri and all the senior officials working for him have either or both of these numerals as a part of their numbers!

Versus his competitors

The fate of films released on the same day as an SRK starrer

The past victims of Shah Rukh Khan clashes

Anand Vaishnav, Indiatimes | Aug 24, 2013

The Times of India

It is never a wise decision to release your film alongside an SRK flick. Don't believe us? Ask Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Sajid Nadiadwala!

Ekta Kapoor is the latest victim of marketing guru Khan's unmatched promotional skills and ability to sense the pulse of the public; as the much-hyped EID clash ended up being a one horse race.

Despite a massive pre-release marketing campaign, Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaraa could not pass the box office test and was completely run over by the pace of Chennai Express. And while Ekta may go around town crying foul, history shows that when it comes to a box office clash, SRK will go all-out to make sure his film delivers and is the first choice of cinegoers all over the world. Fans too have always responded in huge numbers by supporting SRK's releases in a clash. And a clash seems to bring out the best in SRK's creativity as well.

Here's a look at some past examples when rival releases had to bow down to the King!

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai/Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998) - Even though Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda's combo under the direction of David Dhawan was the front runner among trade gurus, Karan Johar's debut film eventually had the last laugh. The risk of casting lover-boy SRK as the father of an eight-year-old worked, and team KKHH laughed away to the bank by making fans smile and cry in equal measure.

Mohabbatein/Mission Kashmir (2000) - This film came at a time when SRK's stardom was being seriously challenged by Hrithik Roshan. However a disappointing screenplay and an underwritten part for Roshan lost out to the magic of Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan, with ample support from a terrific comeback by Big B and a surprise cameo by Aishwarya Rai. Ironically Mission Kashmir was first planned with the Mohabbatein duo!

Don/Jaan E Mann (2006) - Despite the lavish canvas and good music, fans chose SRK's modern day take on Amitabh Bachchan's Don and gave him yet another Diwali blockbuster.

Om Shanti Om/ Saawariya (2007) - This was a clash that made history. Even though Sanjay Leela Bhansali had the backing of a Hollywood studio, his Devdas actor redefined the rules of movie marketing with his promotional blitzkrieg for Om Shanti Om. And as expected, OSO knocked Saawariya out of the race even before the first day ended.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan/Son Of Sardaar (2012) - This battle turned rather ugly, with Ajay Dvegn's banner clashing with YRF over charges of foul play and monopolistic practices. And while fans turned up in big numbers for both film, Yash Chopra's last venture sustained much longer than SOS.

Controversies

2010-13

Shah Rukh Khan's seven famous controversies: 2010-13

The Times of India

Though Ekta shifted the release of her flick "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara!" to get at least 2000 halls across the country, "Chennai Express" producers later backed out to provide sufficient screens to run the movie. Ekta later came to know that it all happened because of Shah Rukh's decision. The end result was that her film ended up opening on just 1600 screens; a limited release for a movie which was reportedly made at a budget of Rs 85 crore. To add to Ekta's woes, these halls were even small ones which in turn had an adverse effect on film's opening day collection.

When Shah Rukh and wife Gauri decided to have a third child through surrogacy, the actor faced charges of sex determination. Incidentally, he was in London with his family at that moment when rumours started spreading as there are laws that prohibit sex determination tests. Even the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) investigated the matter after the reports but recently the corporation informed the Bombay High Court that the superstar was wrongly charged for conducting pre-birth sex determination tests of their surrogate son AbRam.

At an Iftar party, arch rivals Shah Rukh and Salman hugged each other to end their five years of bitter enmity, which started at actress Katrina Kaif's birthday party in the year 2008. However, Salman's absence at Mannat and later his statement to break SRK's "Chennai Express" records clearly indicate that Salman is still in no mood to forget the bitterness between the two. Similarly, Aamir and Ajay Devgn also seem in no hurry to forgive the actor for his misdemeanor and often avoid him during events. Aamir was not happy with the way Shah Rukh portrayed him during awards and events. After the "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" vs "Son of Sardaar" debacle, Ajay Devgn too was not on friendly terms with him and even offered his help to Ekta Kapoor after the producer was miffed with Shah Rukh.

Hafiz Saeed's invitation to Pakistan The actor landed in a controversy after his interview to a politico-socio journal in which he stated that sometimes he becomes an inadvertent object of political leaders. To which Lashkar-E-Taiba founder and one of the most wanted terrorists Hafiz Saeed said that Shah Rukh is welcome in Pakistan and he can live here for as long as he wants. He also said that he will be respected in Pakistan. After Hafiz, Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik also asked Indian government to provide security to superstar Shah Rukh Khan following the latter's remarks on being a Muslim in India. However, later Shah Rukh and Indian govt. condemned their statements.

For his alleged misbehaviour at the Wankhede Stadium, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) officials not only lodged a police complaint against him but also decided to ban him for life from entering the MCA premises. Shah Rukh, a Kolkata Knight Riders' co-owner, was involved in a fracas with the security staff and officials of the cricket body following KKR's victory over MI on May 16, 2012. The actor however denied any misconduct and said he reacted only after children, including his kids, were "manhandled" by the stadium's security staff.

When Shah Rukh was linked to actress Priyanka Chopra , it was quite a surprise for everyone as the actor was a family man and an ideal father. A picture of Priyanka and Shah Rukh sparked the rumours when the former went to visit him at his office at three in the morning. This raised lot of eyebrows and speculations. Even Priyanka was accused of being a home-breaker and her closeness with SRK irked wife Gauri Khan. It was reported that Gauri started avoiding Priyanka and was even snubbed by Gauri when on an event she went to greet her. However, SRK never responded to any of these reports and maintained a stoic silence.

Shah Rukh allegedly assaulted Farah Khan's husband and filmmaker Shirish Kunder at Sanjay Dutt's "Agneepath" bash over his comment on the failure of- "RA.One". Farah Khan sent an sms to reporters saying: "Shah Rukh has always told me that physical abuse is the worst way 2 sort out a problem, n that its means the person who's hitting has either a personal or professional crisis going on, n it saddens me 2 see him doing the same (sic)." However, the truce happened after Shirish and Farah, along with the latter's brother Sajid Khan and their common friend Sajid Nadiadwala, went to SRK's home, Mannat. Shah Rukh is shooting for Farah's "Happy New Year" these days.

Awards

The Times of India

Shahrukh Khan is probably the recipient of the maximum number of awards in Bollywood. Here’s a look at his achievements through awards and honours.

Shahrukh Khan has won many National Awards including the Best Indian Citizen Award (1997), Rajiv Gandhi Award for Excellence in the Field of Entertainment (in 2002), the Padma Shri which is India's fourth highest civilian award from the Government of India ( in 2005). He is also among the 10 recipients of the IIFA-FICCI Frames Awards for the "Most Powerful Entertainer of the Decade and the Global Entertainment and Media personality Award at FICCI Frames 2010 Excellence awards (2010).

Shahrukh Khan has been a favourite at the Filmfare Awards that are held annually in Mumbai. From hosting them to walking away with the black lady, SRK perhaps has more Filmfare awards than his contemporaries. Shahrukh won his first Filmfare way back in 1993 for Best Newcomer and has continued the tradition over the years. Films like My Name Is Khan, Chak De! India, Swades: We, the People, Devdas brought him great acclaim and the badshah walked away with the coveted title.

Madame Tussaud’s is known to immortalize celebrities in wax by casting their exact impressions and putting these wax figures on display at the museum’s London branch. Along with Bollywood celebrities like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, SRK’s wax statue was unveiled at Madame Tussauds (London) in 2007 and subsequent versions were installed at Madame Tussauds museums in Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and New York in 2010. But that's not all! Another statue of SRK'S was installed at the Musée Grévin in Paris IN the same year (2007). During the same year, he was accorded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of the Arts and Literature) award by the French government for his exceptional career. The same year, Khan was also conferred with the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka which carries the honorable Datuk.
