Smriti Irani may have shifted gears from television to politics, but she continues to entertain her followers with her hilarious posts. Be it her take on trending memes or working mom jokes, she manages to crack up netizens with her sense of humour.

Twisting the trends

Smriti is quite updated about the trending memes on the internet. She shared this photo with her pet and twisted Bigg Boss 13 fame Shehnaaz Gill's dialogue. She wrote, "When sadda kutta is not ‘Tommy’ but Sheru." It left netizens in splits.

Introducing her 'don't angry me' look

Smriti shared this 'then and now' collage and joked, "#taazatuesdays के शुभ अवसर पर introducing #the Don’t Angry Me Look .... rishton ke roop bhale hi badal jaye... haav bhaav nahi badalte #flashback.”

Sharing woes of a working mom

Smriti loves to create memes with her photos and the expression matches her caption perfectly. She wrote, "#when you are thankful that the joke is not on you."

Being all witty with her replies

While she may have captioned this one as pandemic mornings, a user drew everyone's attention to the hawai chappals she was sporting in it. This made Smriti give the user a witty reply. She wrote, "Arrey bhai hawai chappal hai 200 Rupee wali .. ab brand naa pucho.. local hai (It is hawai chappal for Rs 200. Now don't ask me the brand because it is local)." She was lauded for being 'vocal for local’.

Making light of the pandemic

Well, Covid-19 has led everyone to sport masks and face shields. While travelling for work in an airplane, Smriti shared a photo covered in one, and joked, "Early morning space shuttle wali feelings."

Being a funny mommy

Smriti loves her family and is quite familiar with the sibling fights. With this one, she wrote, "My children ... when they are not busy trying to kill each other; clean up quite nice."

Desiring the end of 2020

Smriti posted a collage in August last year, where she could be seen sporting a sad expression. She captioned her photo aptly as, "When you are waiting for 2020 to end." Many related to the post and left laughter emojis.

Irani courted controversy repeatedly, May 15, 2018: The Times of India

Days after she drew the ire of the Rashtrapati Bhawan over the controversy that broke out at the National Film Awards, Union minister Smriti Irani was divested of the charge of the crucial information and broadcasting ministry.

A controvery’s child since she assumed charge of the I&B ministry in July 2017, Irani has been at the centre of rows on multiple occasions, much like her stint as Union human resource development minister.

The controversy over the National Film Awards, widely regarded as bureaucratic mishandling, broke out when officials of the I&B ministry sought to blame the Rashtrapati Bhawan for a last-minute change in programme that led to over 50 national awardees boycotting the annual gala. What added to the embarrassment was the clarification issued by the President’s House that any claim that the President’s programme was decided at the “eleventh hour” was wrong.

Of the 125 recipients this year, the President distrubuted awards to only 11. The I&B ministry only informed award winners about the break in tradition and the change in programme on the evening prior to the event.

In March too, Irani had courted controvery over an order on ‘fake news’. The ministry’s order said journalists accused of being purveyors of fake news would lose their accreditation as soon as a complaint was made, and even before charges were proven. The order, which drew widespread criticism from the media and civil society, was revoked less than 24 hours after it was issued on the PMO’s intervention.

Even before the dust settled on the ‘fake news’ row, Irani announced her ministry’s decision to constitute a committee to frame rules to regulate news portals and media websites, once again leading to concerns over attempts to gag free press.

The most public spat, though, and one that caused considerable embarrassment to the government, was Irani’s persistently unpleasant exchange with public broadcaster Prasar Bharati. The impasse began late last year when Irani decided to implement recommendations by the Sam Pitroda-led committee to make Prasar Bharati a leaner organisation.

Among other suggestions to cut the flab, Irani’s ministry recommended the sacking, with immediate effect, of all contractual staff, a move that was resisted and rejected by Prasar Bharati chairman Surya Prakash. The ministry then went on to stop the release of funds to the broadcaster, leading PB to pay salaries from its own contingency funds. This too became a subject matter of discussion within the government and in Parliament, forcing the government to eventually release the funds to PB.

From Miss India contestant to soap opera star to giant slayer, Smriti Irani’s career has not had a dull moment. Irani captured India’s imagination as ‘Tulsi’ in one of the most successful running soaps of all time. In 2004, when most would have been thinking of graduating to a film career, Irani chose politics running an unsuccessful but feisty campaign against Kapil Sibal from Chandni Chowk. In a nod to her fighting spirit, Irani was made Rajya Sabha member in 2011, and held several positions in parliamentary committees till 2014 when she challenged Congress president Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. She lost the poll battle but won a cabinet position in the Modi government.

Controversies though were not far behind (least of which were her “fake”

educational qualification), and soon she was divested of the ‘sensitive’ HRD portfolio to I&B ministry. There, too, a controversial proposal to reign in ‘fake news’ placed the government in crisis that could only be defused after the notification was withdrawn. She appeared to have lost favour and moved to textiles but her dogged campaign against the ‘lapata saansad’ (read Rahul Gandhi) which led to a shock victory in the Gandhi pocket borough of Amethi has cemented her political career.
