2013

The Times of India

Here is a list of films that The Times of India estimates were hits of the year 2013

Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaiya

The film not only marked Santhanam's venture into film production with his Handmade Films, but also kick started the year on a positive note turning out as a hit. The comedy crapper was a much awaited film that created quite a buzz and didn't disappoint the audience.

Vishwaroopam

With all the pre release controversies, Kamal Haasan's magnum opus film reached to the fans with the all the mileage it could gather and turned out be a hit film which was much appreciated for the effort and brilliance in the making. Despite the fragmented release, Vishwaroopam garnered positive reviews. A sequel to the film, Vishwaroopam II is set for release in early next year.

Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga

Pandiaraj's comedy entertainer Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga starring Vimal and Sivakarthikeyan was a complete fun and family entertainer, that turned out be a box-office success completing more than 100 days in theatres in Tamil Nadu. The tale of a wastrel turning responsible has been done to death in Tamil cinema but what set this film apart was the refreshingly effortless manner in which the director spun his tale.

Ethir Neechal

After delivering a hit with KBKR, Sivakarthikeyan was back with another hit with this film which also seems to have given him the confidence to take up roles that do not rely completely on humour. A young man embarrassed with his name decides to carve a name for him through his achievement form the crux of the story.

Singam II

If 'Singam' was mass masala, then 'Singam-2' is doubly so. What worked big time for the movie was the way the director unabashedly went about framing kick-ass mass scenes. The success of the film ensured that 'Singam-2' becomes one of the most successful sequels.

Thalaivaa

The mere star power of Vijay rings the bells at the box office for the film. Vijay is in top form when he's normal and menacing. Sathyaraj as the don is effective. But the one who makes this arduous journey enjoyable is Santhanam, whose poker-faced humour provides relief in a largely grim story.

Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam

Giving his hat-trick hit of the year, Sivakarthikeyan is among the bankable heroes of Kollywood. What added to the success of the film apart from Sivakarthikeyan, Sathyaraj and Soori is the lighthearted manner in which the director told his story.

Raja Rani

The film became a hit for not only for its breezy love scenes, but also for the message that there is life after love failure. Arya and Nayanthara get married despite being unable to come out of their previous romances. How do they learn to accept each other, and eventually fall in love forms the story.

Arrambam

Ajith is known for his box office openings and doesn't disappoint with his latest flick as well. The film is a very familiar tale of corruption, betrayal and revenge, served up with a dash of style. The director had spun an action thriller that, for the most parts, keeps moving at a fast clip.

Pandiya Naadu

A smartly-written action drama, provided the much needed hit film for Vishal who was long overdue. The film is about a family whose harmony is shattered by anti-social elements, and the consequential quest for revenge by the hero. The director manages to find a balance between the family moments and the action.
