The Bhiwani boxer (born 1986) was the first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal. His bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics inspired an entire generation of Indians to take to the ring

Vijender has had an illustrious career in amateur boxing, winning at least one medal [each] at the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, World Championships and Olympics. He was also rated the world No. 1 middleweight boxer (75kg category) in 2009.

Vijender won a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games

He is reported to be set to join the professional ranks as a heavyweight pugilist Gurcharan Singh Nagra, who finished fourth at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, had also turned pro soon after.
