AHMEDABAD: A newly-built Akshardham temple in Robbinsville near New Jersey, touted as the second largest Hindu shrine outside India after Angkor Wat, witnessed a consecration (pran pratishtha) ceremony performed by Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual head of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, in a grand celebration on Sunday morning.

The consecration ceremonies for other deities took place in the days leading up to the main event.

The temple boasts the largest elliptical dome made from stone and utilised 1.9 million cubic feet of stone sourced from 29 different locations worldwide. More than 12,500 volunteers worked diligently over two years.A documentary showcased Mahant Swami's involvement in designing the primary idol of Lord Swaminarayan and highlighted the contributions of senior sadhus and volunteers to the temple’s construction. Ishwarcharandas Swami, the international convenor of BAPS, paid tribute to Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the former spiritual leader of the sect, and his unwavering commitment to constructing this grand temple in the US. He recalled Pramukh Swami Maharaj's visit to the land in 2014, where he emphasized the dasya bhakti path (the path of selfless devotion).

The ceremony was marked by a series of events, with devotees from various parts of the US, Canada, and around the world participating. In India, many temples organised screenings for sadhus, and a significant number of devotees also took part virtually, BAPS volunteers said.
