Composition of AIMPLB

Representation of women

Syed Mohammed, There are only 40 women in 301-member AIMPLB, August 23, 2017: The Times of India

Questions are being raised over the low representation of women in All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) even as the board has accepted Supreme Court's judgment on triple talaq.

Official numbers peg the number of women members in the 301-member board at around 40. This brings the representation of women in the board to less than 8%.

“The board has higher representation of women than many political parties, including the left. The representation is eight per cent. This is much better than many other bodies,“ said board member Dr Asma Zahra. While this may be the case, a member who did not wish to be identified said that the board has few women members on the important `aamila' or executi ve panel. “There's need to improve the numbers. The board is doing all to ensure this,“ the member said. The aamilah draws membership from two other panels, meeqatis or 100 term-based members and taseesi, or 201 founder or permanent members.
