After 88 yrs, woman AUSU prez

A research scholar has become the first female president of Allahabad University Students' Union (AUSU) after a gap of 88 years. Richa Singh defeated Rajnish Kumar Singh of Chhatra Morcha by just 11 votes. Before her the last female president of the union was Shyam Kumar Nehru who won in 1927. She was Jawaharlal Nehru's cousin and went on to become a Rajya Sabha member in the 60's.

Richa, a candidate of lesser known outfit Friends' Union, thus has broken the glass ceiling in the elections which were dominated by R S S' student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Richa was supported by the Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha as its own candidate had been disqualified. While Richa managed to secure 2,253 votes, Rajnish got 2,242 in the AUSU polls held.
