The UN's refugee agency UNHCR collates data on asylum applications lodged in 44 `industrialized' countries. The asylum application data for the first six months of 2014 shows that these countries received a little over three lakh asylum applications. Among the countries of origin of these asylum-seekers, Syria has the highest number. It is followed by Iraq and Afghanistan, countries like Syria are in the grips of political unrest. Interestingly, there were over 4,000 asylum requests filed by Indian nationals, the 16th highest country of origin for asylum-seekers in these 44 countries.
