Baduria

Town in the Basirhat subdivision of the Twenty-four Par- ganas District, Bengal, situated in 22 45' N. and 88° 48' E., on the right bank of the Jamuna river. Population (1901), 12,921, of whom 7,074 were Hindus and 5,847 Muhammadans. The town has a con- siderable trade in jute, molasses, and sugar. Baduria was constituted a municipality in 1869. The income and expenditure during the decade ending 190 1-2 averaged Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 4,800 respectively. In 1903-4 the income, which is mainly derived from a tax on persons (or property tax), and the expenditure were each Rs. 5,000.
