Barh Town

Head-quarters of the subdivision of the same name in Patna District, Bengal, situated in 25degree 29' N. and 85° 43' E., on the Ganges. Population (1901), 12,164. Barh is a station on the East Indian Railway, 299 miles from Calcutta, and has a considerable trade in country produce. Jessamine oil (chameli) of a superior quality is manufactured. Barh was constituted a municipality in 1870. The income during the decade ending 190 1-2 averaged Rs. 6,700, and the expenditure Rs. 6,500. In 1903-4 the income was Rs. 10,400, mainly from a tax on persons (or property tax) ; and the expenditure was Rs. 9,500. The town contains the usual subdivisional offices, a sub-jail with accommodation for 28 prisoners, and an English cemetery.
