2025: Bodoland People’s Front sweeps

Sep 28, 2025: The Times of India

Guwahati : Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) stormed back to office in Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), winning 28 of 40 seats and dislodging the coalition of BJP, UPPL and GSP, reports Prabin Kalita . The upset marks the first electoral setback for BJP in Assam since 2016 and sets up a sharp realignment in tribal politics as Hagrama Mohilary prepares to return as chief of the Sixth Schedule autonomous council on Oct 3.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma downplayed the defeat, describing Mohilary’s victory as an NDA win. “BPF is also part of NDA and now all 40 seats of BTC are held by NDA constituents,” he said.

BPF will remain part of NDA, Himanta asserts after BTC loss

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that Hagrama Mohilary met him after results were declared Saturday. “He will remain with NDA... There is absolutely no problem with the alliance, and we will continue to work together,” Sarma said.

BTC administers Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), an area carved out under the 2003 Bodo Accord to give political autonomy to the Bodo people in western Assam. Mohilary, a former militant leader who founded BPF, had headed the council for three terms before being ousted by BJPbacked United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) in 2020.

“The election results clearly reflect what UPPL has done for the people of BTC,” Mohilary said after the victory. He is expected to meet governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya to stake claim and may induct at least two BJP members as executive councillors. The oathtaking is likely to be attended by the governor and CM Sarma. UPPL managed only seven seats, while BJP secured five. Congress and GSP failed to open their accounts. Polling was held Sept 22.

Outgoing chief executive member Pramode Boro of UPPL conceded gracefully: “The people of BTR have spoken, and although the results are contrary to our expectations, I accept their verdict with humility.”

CM Sarma said BJP’s performance fell short as the death of singer Zubeen Garg on Sept 19 overshadowed the campaign and kept many voters away. “We refrained from any election-related outreach during the last three days before the polls,” he said. “We had to bring back his mortal remains from Singapore and arrange for his cremation. Our small sacrifice made Zubeen’s farewell dignified. We do not take this as a defeat.”

Sarma is looking ahead to the 2026 assembly elections. He said BJP’s vote share had risen despite the loss and stressed that NDA held all 40 seats in the council.
