The Times of India’s comments
Bollywood's highest earning celebs The Times of India
SRK He's the badshah of Bollywood and rightly so. Apart from his long standing career in the Hindi film industry, his personal life, his controversies, there's another reason why SRK stands out from the crowd. The actor has made it to the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list and there's no guesses for this one! King Khan dominated the list, capturing the Numero Uno position. As of December 31st, the actor makes 220.5 Crore through films and his many endorsements. SRK's last release Chennai Express broke all records at the Box Office and was one of the highest earners of 2013. According to the Forbes list, Shahrukh's revenue is up by 9% this year although he lost out on a few brand endorsements. There's no doubt that Shahrukh Khan is second to none!
Salman Khan- Arch rivals turned friends (at least they are cordial to each other publicly) Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan both make it to the list. While SRK has been ranked No.1 on the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list, Sallu comes in third after cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni who occupies the 2nd position. As of 31st Oct'13, the Dabangg actor rakes in an estimated 157.5 Crore through films and endorsements. Salman has actively been working on his charitable foundation Being Human which contributes to the poor and needy. The actor has had blockbusters to his credit including Dabangg, Dabangg 2 and Ek Tha Tiger to name a few. In terms of popularity, he's ranked third on the list.
Amitabh Bachchan- Big B is a force to reckon with! The legendary actor who went through a slump when his production company ABCL went bankrupt and the actor had to start from scratch. Kaun Banega Crorepati came as blessing in disguise and ever since, there's no looking back for the Shahenshah of Bollywood. One of the highest paid actors of Bollywood, Big B is much in demand when it comes to films, event launches and endorsements. According to the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list, Amitabh Bachchan makes it to the 5th position and as of 31st Oct'13, the actor earns 147.5 Crore. Big B's popularity knows no bounds as he is the most followed Indian celebrity on Twitter.
Akshay Kumar- Khiladi actor Akshay Kumar has appeared in over a 100 Hindi films and has quickly made it to the list of one of India's richest Bollywood celebs. His hard work and persistency has paid off and the actor is said to earn 118.13 Crore as of 31st Oct'13 according to the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list. Khiladi Kumar is ranked 6th on the list and although he does not do as many endorsements as his contemporaries, he still rakes in the moolah! As per media reports, the actor was also the highest tax paying Bollywood celeb in 2013 and made headlines when it was learnt that he paid 18 crores in advance tax. Today, Akshay's as big as any Khan and he's proved that slow and steady wins the race!
Ranbir Kapoor-He's the Kapoor scion and after hit films like Barfi! and Yeh Jawaani Hain Deewani not only has he proved his mettle, but also apparently hiked his fees. Ranbir is the most promising actor of the new generation and it won't be long before he rules the roost in Bollywood. The actor is also raking in the money to make him one of the youngest and richest B'town stars in India. According to the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list (2013), the actor earns an estimated amount of 68.58 Crore as of 31st Oct'13 and makes it to the 8th position on the list. Ranbir Kapoor has many endorsements to his name including big brand names like Pepsi, Nissan, Lays and Oreo. These ads surely help Ranbir make large sums of money. According to a report in India Today, the actor has apparently charged 25 crores to endorse a brand that makes chips. No wonder he makes it to the list!
Katrina Kaif- The Boom girl who entered Bollywood literally with a boom, has climbed the ladder of success in a short span of time. Katrina Kaif is in demand and the lovely lady follows her alleged boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor in the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list, ranking 9th on the list, beating Bollywood beauties like Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. According to some media reports, Kats allegedly took home 7 crores as her fee for a brand endorsement. As per a report in Daily Bhaskar, the actress makes 1.5 crore a day thanks to her many brand endorsements. According to the Forbes list, the actress makes 63.75 Crore as of 31st Oct'13. While Katrina endorses more brands than she acts in films, the pretty lass is not complaining. After all, with the glitz and glamour, the money matters too!
Hrithik Roshan- He's the superhero of Indian cinema and he's rightly proved that with Krrish 3. This film raked in a lot of money for Hrithik and papa Roshan who seemed to be laughing their way to the bank. But that apart, Hrithik, who is exclusive in his choice of films and brand endorsements, is one of the richest Bollywood stars in India. Hrithik ranks 10th on the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list and as of 31st Oct'13, he earns 62.5 Crore. Further to reports in Forbes, Hrithik has around 10 endorsements to his credit and draws 63 crore from there alone!
Deepika Padukone- Deepika has written off her critics and silenced all those who questioned her worth in Bollywood! The petite actress has been having a good year since 2012. With films like Race 2, Cocktail, Chennai Express, Yeh Jawaani Hain Deewani and Goliyon Ki RasLeela Ram Leela, Deepika's bank balance seems to have gotten fatter. Considered as one of the most bankable stars today, she was the only actress to enter the 500 crore club with the success of her earlier mentioned films. According to the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list, Deepika makes 39.5 Crore as of 31st Oct'13 through films and brand endorsements and ranks 11th on the list, beating many celebs like Kareena Kapoor, Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan! Way to go Dips!
Priyanka Chopra- The sultry actress has set her eyes on Hollywood and an international music career. After achieving success in Bollywood, Pee Cee is juggling multiple careers. She's a star and a true diva who is also one of the most hard working celebrities in Bollywood. Priyanka is also a favourite amongst directors and films like Krrish 3 and Agneepath have given the petite actress a reason to smile. Pee Cee aka Piggy Chops is one of the richest Indian celebs and has made it to the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list where she ranks 12th. According to Forbes India, the actress makes 36.57 Crore as of 31st Oct'13. With the way she's expanding her career, we are sure sky's not a limit for her and she will only get richer!
Kareena Kapoor- She's the babe of Bollywood and Kareena Kapoor is one of the most demanding actresses in Bollywood. Bebo has the looks, the talent and a lineage that is envious and a surname she can boast about for years to come. As one of the most sought after actresses in the Hindi film industry, it does not matter whether Kareena delivers a hit or flop as she's always in demand, both in films and in ads. According the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list, Bebo ranks 13th, right below her rival Priyanka Chopra who is positioned at number 12. Bebo earns 56.92 Crore as of 31st Oct'13. It is believed that the Kapoor girl has under 15 brand under her belt has creditable endorsements to her name.

There were 103 celebrities on the 2014 list.
Salim-Suleiman were counted as two.
Kareena Kapoor and Malaika Aurora Khan were not counted as Muslims.
Shahid Kapoor was counted as a 50 per cent Muslim.
Indpaedia was disappointed
when it did not find India’s biggest star and third-most famous celebrity (after Tendulkar and Dhoni) on the list. Perhaps Rajni saar did not earn enough in 2013 to qualify.

2017: Duff & Phelps’ Celebrity Brand Values in India
On December 21, 2017, Duff & Phelps, the global valuation and corporate finance advisor, published the third edition of its annual study of celebrity brand values in India. In the 2017 report titled Rise of the Millennials: India’s Most Valuable Celebrity Brands, Virat Kohli has replaced Shah Rukh Khan as India’s top-ranking celebrity brand. Kohli, along with Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, lead the ascent of the millennials to the top of the rankings.
“For the first time since we began publishing our rankings, Shah Rukh Khan has slipped from the top ranking and been replaced by Virat Kohli. Kohli is now the first choice of brands to engage and attract consumers, fueled by his extraordinary on-field performances and off-field charisma,” said Varun Gupta, Duff & Phelps Managing Director and Region Leader - India, Japan and Southeast Asia.
“In addition to Kohli, other young celebrities such as Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and badminton champion P.V. Sindhu have either risen in the rankings or entered our top 15 list, backed by note-worthy performances in their respective fields and strong endorsement signings over the last year,” Mr. Gupta added.
“While Bollywood celebrities continue to dominate the top 15, sportspersons are providing tough competition as Kohli, Dhoni and Sindhu, collectively valued at US$180 million, account for almost a quarter of the total celebrity brand value of the top 15,” said Aviral Jain, Duff & Phelps Director.
The report also highlights evolving trends in the brand endorsements space, including celebrities endorsing tourism campaigns, backing various sports tournaments/franchises, and launching their own line of merchandise.
Key findings from the report include:
Overall brand value of the top15 celebrities is US$712 million.
Virat Kohli tops the list with brand value of US$144 million, followed by Shah Rukh Khan (US$106 million), Deepika Padukone (US$93 million), Akshay Kumar (US$47 million) and Ranveer Singh (US$42 million).
New entrants to the top15 celebrities included Varun Dhawan debuting at number 10 and P.V. Sindhu at number 15.
Millennials currently endorse 64 percent of the total brands endorsed by the top15 celebrities and constitute 63 percent of the total brand value.
The top sectors using celebrity brand endorsers included personal care, food and beverages, automobiles, smartphones and clothing.

Captain Virat Kohli has retained his rank as India’s No. 1 celebrity endorser in 2018. The 30-year-old cricketer’s brand value has shot up by 18% from the previous year, revealed a celebrity brand endorsement report.
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, whose latest film Zero failed to enthuse the boxoffice, saw his brand value slip by an alarming 43%. Khan who has been occupied with film productions and health issues, signed only a few endorsement deals over the last year. As his last hit movie Raees was released in January 2017, the actor lost some of his endorsements, including ViJohn, Dish TV and Frooti to younger celebrities, according to the report by Duff & Phelps.
The total value of the top 20 celebrity brands was pegged at $877 million in 2018, with the top 10 contributing more than 75% of the total value. “While Bollywood celebrities dominate the rankings of the top 20 celebrities, sportspersons provide tough competition,” said Aviral Jain, MD at Duff & Phelps. “Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, M S Dhoni and P V Sindhu collectively contributed almost $241 million, which is over 27% of the cumulative brand value of the top 20 celebrities.”
Interestingly, master blaster Tendulkar’s brand value is on the rise despite his retirement from cricket. With a brand valuation of $22 million, the former cricketer currently endorses around 12 brands, including BMW. His erstwhile teammate Rahul Dravid, too, inked endorsement deals with multiple brands, including Philips Air Purifiers and Google Pixel, post retirement.
In addition, brands have started to leverage the larger platform that is being provided by the rising popularity of power couples.
Celebrity-led endorsements over the past decade grew 10% annually, from 650 in 2007 to 1,660 in 2017, according to sports & entertainment marketing agency ESP Properties. “The celebrity endorsement market in India has matured from vanilla endorsement deals to full-fledged partnerships through innovative routes such as equity deals and strategic partnerships,” said Varun Gupta, MD and Asia-Pacific Leader for Valuation Services at Duff & Phelps.

Rupali Mukherjee, June 19, 2024: The Times of India

From: Rupali Mukherjee, June 19, 2024: The Times of India
New Delhi : Cricket seems to have reigned supreme in terms of brand endorsements, yet Bollywood emerged as the shining star, witnessing the highest growth in endorsements (value and volumes) in 2023.
Former India captain Virat Kohli reclaimed his position at the pinnacle of India’s most powerful celebrity brands, boasting a value of nearly $228 million in 2023, according to Kroll’s Celebrity Brand Valuation Study. However, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was the true mover and shaker in terms of growth in brand endorsements, seeing his value soar to $120.7 million and catapulting him from 10th place in 2022 to the third spot in 2023.
“2023 has been the year marking ‘Return of the Kings’ —Virat, SRK and Bollywood. We also witnessed rise of celebpreneurship in India, ex- panding their sphere of influence and blurring boundaries between entertainment and business,” Aviral Jain, MD (valuation advisory services), Kroll, told TOI.
In an increasing trend, a growing number of celebrities are leveraging their star power and flexing their entrepreneurial muscles and becoming what are being termed celebpreneurs. Some have launched their own brands, while some are investing in start-ups, the study by Kroll, a leading independent global risk and financial advisory solutions firm, said.
For instance, in 2023, Akshay Kumar launched his own athleisure brand Force IX, Kareena Kapoor Khan launched her own Korean skincare brand Quench Botanics and Deepika Padukone launched a luxury skincare brand 82°E.
Under celebpreneurship, a growing number of stars are ditching the silver screen for boardroom, diversifying portfolios to build successful businesses. We’ve done some parallels with Hollywood, looking at 80 startups of top 50 Hollywood celebrities, benchmarking by age and industry. It’s no longer just the top four or five celebrities, many are getting involved. For example, we have Nayanthara with 9Skin, Kriti Sanon (Hyphen) and Sanjay Dutt (The Glen Walk) getting involved in various ventures,’’ Jain said. In Hollywood, the top product categories, which are attracting celeb power, include beauty and personal care and food and beverages. In India, a similar trend is visible.
