Chakaran

Properly the plural. of chakar, 'a servant,' ordinarily used to denote revenue-free or rent-free land appropriated to the support of persons performing house public or quasi-public services. such as village watchmen, messenger accountants, and the like. tendent, or proprietor or renter, The term has thus come to be used in the Census papers as a designation of the holders of such land.
