Apology from Facebook

[ From the archives of the Times of India]

Jorhat: The All Assam Chutia Students’ Union (Aacsu) on Saturday protested against a social networking site which blocked accounts of thousands of subscribers from the Chutia community suspecting them to be fake and fabricated. Chutia, pronounced Sutiya, is a community in Assam. In Hindi, though it’s an expletive. Speaking to reporters in Jorhat, Aacsu general secretary JyotiprasadChutia said, “Facebook has blocked accounts of subscribers belonging to Assam’s Chutia community. Since Chutia is an abusive word in Hindi, Facebook authorities thought account holders are fake. They don’t know that Chutia is an ethnic tribe of Assam with a rich history.” Aacsu plans to burn an effigy of the social networking site on Monday in five districts of upper Assam, including Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat. They demanded public apology from the social networking site. “We are unhappy as they did not verify before blocking thousands of our accounts. It could be a conspiracy against our community. We warn them to abstain from such acts in future,” said Jyotiprasad. The site blocked accounts of prominent personalities from the community like KrishnamoniChutia. “We protest against this and demand immediate reactivation of our accounts,” he said. TNN
