Shankaracharyas

Swaroopanand Saraswati

TNN, Sep 12, 2022: The Times of India

Bhopal: Dwarka Peeth Shankaracharya Swaroopanand Saraswati was known as the ‘Revolutionary Sadhu’ during India’s freedom struggle.

The funeral will take place at his ashram Shridham Jhoteshwar, around 300km from Bhopal, at 4pm on Monday. He was the Shankaracharya of Dwaraka Peeth and Jyotir Math. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, MP chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, MP PCC chief and former CM Kamal Nath and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh were among those who offered their condolences.

Known to speak his mind on socio-political issues, the late Shankaracharya was born to a Brahmin family in Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh. He left his home at the age of nine in the path of God and undertook religious sojourns to different places in the country. He received education in Vedas and other Hindu scriptures from Sri Karpatri Maharaj in Kanhi. And when Mahatma Gandhi gave the call for the Quit India movement in 1942, Swami Swaroopanand – then known as Pothiram Upadhyay – joined the freedom struggle as a 19-year-old. He was jailed for nine months in Kashi and for another six months in Madhya Pradesh by the Raj.

He was also appointed president of Ram Rajya Parishad, the political party of his Guru Karpatri Maharaj. In 1950, Shankaracharya of Sharda Peet Swami Brahmanand Saraswati gave him ‘Dand Deeksha’ and he began to be recognised as Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati. He became Shankaracharya of Dwarka Peeth in 1982. He was known to be close to several political leaders, the most prominent of them being former CM Digvijaya Singh, who had taken ‘Deeksha’ from him.
