Harman & Co Hope To Turn Tables After WC Heartbreak

India will be looking to erase the memories of a heartbreaking World Cup final defeat in 2017 when they take on England in the semifinals of the Women’s World T20. England beat India by nine runs in an exciting final of the 50-over global meet, a tournament that ushered a new era for women’s cricket in India.

To their credit, the ‘Women in Blue’ have been able to build on that momentum and a fantastic run in the ongoing World T20 is a testimony to that. India beat two formidable teams in their group --the ‘White Ferns’ from New Zealand by 34 runs and the ‘Southern Stars’ from Australia by 48 runs -- maintaining an all-win record at the league stage.

However, England, the reigning ODI world champions, are a quality side in the shortest format and the scars of the summit clash loss at Lord’s can play on the minds of Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur, the two pillars of the women’s side. Skipper Harmanpreet’s performance will be key to India’s success as she is known to rise to the occasion. In the current World T20, she has performed in two group league matches -- a matchwinning century against New Zealand and a quick-fire 43 against Australia --, which proved to be decisive in the final context of the game.

Australia’s Healy on track to face champs WI: Australia have received a boost ahead of their semifinal against defending champions West Indies with Alyssa Healy on track to take part in a repeat of the 2016 Women’s WT20 final. Alyssa, who is their top-scorer in the tournament so far with 157 runs, had suffered a concussion after colliding with teammate Megan Schutt in their game against India. West Indies will be full of confidence after a last-over finish against England to finish on top of Group A.

2nd ODI, Mumbai: India wins

Smriti, seamers shine as India clinch series, February 26, 2019: The Times of India

Riding on a superb spell by their pacers Shikha Pandey (4/18 in 10 overs) and Jhulan Goswami (4/30 in 8.3 overs), India outclassed England by seven wickets in the second ODI to clinch the threematch series 2-0 at the Wankhede Stadium, mumbai.

Pandey and Goswami wreaked havoc with fiery spells, taking four wickets each to bundle out the opposition for a paltry 161 in just 43.3 overs, before a half-century by in-form opener Smriti Mandhana (63), and an unbeaten 47-run knock by skipper Mithali Raj helped India cruise to the target in just 41.1 overs.

India have gained two points to go up the ladder in the ICC Women’s ODI championship table. As a result, they seem to be on target to qualify directly for the 2021 World Cup.

Mandhana added 73 for the second wicket with Poonam Raut (32 off 65 balls) to set the base, and then 66 for the third wicket with Mithali.

Brief scores: England Women 161 in 43.3 overs (Natalie Sciver 85, Shikha Pandey 4-18, Jhulan Goswami 4-30) lost to India Women 162-3 in 41.1 overs (Smriti Mandhana 63, Mithali Raj 47 not out) by seven wickets.
