2016: A new spider named after Harry Potter series
After discovering a new spider species in the Kans forest area in Karnataka, this group of Mumbai-based scientists decided to pick a name for it from the biggest universe inside our universe - Harry Potter. Why?
Because of this curious feature. The spider resembles the Sorting Hat which if you remember belonged to Godric Gryffindor, one of the founders of Hogwarts School in J K Rowling's much loved series.
IT'S ALL IN THE HAT
Meet Eriovixia Gryffindori, only 7mm in length but already much bigger in popularity. The men behind the discovery and the interesting choice of its name are Sumukha Javagal, Javed Ahmed and Rajashree Khalap who then published their findings in the Indian Journal of Arachnology. In an interview with TOI, Javed Ahmed explained, "We are very excited to have found this new spider whose shape is very similar to the magical sorting hat worn by the wizard (Gryffindor) in Harry Potter."
