Software tool built in India is used globally, 2021

Ernst & Young, the professional services and accounting firm, knows how complicated keeping track of software is, because their clients regularly ask them to help manage it. So, when EY’s teams in India developed a proprietary SAM platform called EY Atom and got excellent feedback from clients, the solution was deployed in the Americas and Europe to the company’s global client base.
Atom manages software assets via automation. The dynamic risk analytics capabilities of Atom enable stakeholders to derive business insights through customised dashboards and has helped clients optimise their software costs by as much as 20% over the initial years.
Maya Ramachandran, consulting partner at EY India, says Atom started off as a professional hobby based on their experience with clients around SAM. “We believed that managing software assets would get increasingly complex as organisations accelerated their digital journey, and that automation would be an absolute priority to manage software within a diverse and distributed IT environment,” she says. So, a small team got together and started thinking through automating various aspects of managing software. “And we started implementing our end products in a modular fashion for clients. The efficiencies and the feedback from clients were phenomenal, and that encouraged us to adopt a more formal approach towards agile product development,” she says.
After pitching the success of the project to EY’s top brass, the India teams managed to obtain additional funding to industrialise the product and get it ready for the next phase of solution growth. “Most of the development work was done with the help of our engagement teams, subject matter experts and developers,” says Ramachandran.
The team that developed Atom has experience working on multiple automation and technology initiatives. Understanding licensing terms and conditions is a niche skill and requires substantial experience and expertise. “The team is supported by business and functional teams with deep expertise in software products, licensing, automation, and governance. Most of the Atom team also have extensive experience working with clients, which enable them to anticipate business and data requirements,” Ramachandran says.
