Chennai : Indian fencing’s torchbearer CA Bhavani Devi made history, bagging the country’s first-ever medal at the Asian Fencing Championships. The Chennai Olympian won a bronze at the prestigi ous tournament being held in Wuxi, China this year. Bhavani stunned World No. 1 Misaki Emura of Japan 15-10 in the women’s sabre quarterfinals to guarantee India’s maiden medal at the eve nt. The 29-year-old Bhavani edged past Dospay Karina of Kazakhstan 15-13 in the round of 32 before getting the better of World No. 40 and third seed Seri Ozaki of Japan 15-11 in the pre-quarterfinal match-up. S he went one step ahead and beat the reigning world champion Misaki in the quarterfinals — her first win over the Japanese in four meetings — before suffering a narrow 15-14 loss to Uzbekistan’s Zaynab Deyibekova. Talking about her successful run, Bhavani told TOI: “Sometimes we forget the rankings of the opponents and look at them simply as fencers. I knew my match against Misaki would be tough, but I was desperate to fight and reach the podium. For that I changed my strategy and found the right distance, timing and movement. All that worked really well. ”
Bhavani was expecting to make the final, but fell agonizingly close. But this bronze will her confidence to bring laurels to the country. “I am looking forward to the events that will follow (including the Asian Games). I hope to keep the good work going,” she added.

CA Bhavani Devi won the gold medal on Saturday in the Sabre event in the Senior Commonwealth Fencing championship 2018 held in Canberra, Australia.
Bhavani Devi is the first Indian to win a gold medal in the Commonwealth Championship. She defeated England’s Emily Ruaux 15-12 in the final, according to information received here.
Earlier, the Chennai-born Bhavani Devi had put it across Catriona Thomson (Scotland) in the semi-final. Bhavani Devi earlier this year won a silver medal in the Tournoi Satellite Fencing Championship in Iceland.
Last year, she becamethe first Indian fencer to win gold at the World Cup satellite tournament at Reykjavik. Bhavani had also reached the quarter-finals at the Asian fencing championships at Hong Kong.

New Delhi:Indian ace fencer CA Bhavani Devi on Wednesday won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2022 in the Senior Women’s Sabre Individual category. According to i nformation received here, she defeated Veronika Vasileva of Australia 15-10 to win the title in London.
Bhavani Devi had scripted history by becoming the lone Indian fencer to qualify fo r the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after she reached the quarter-final of the 2020 Fencing World Cup in Hungary.

Bhavani Devi wins gold in sabre event

CA Bhavani Devi has won the gold medal in the sabre event of the Turnoi Satellite Fencing Championship held at Reykjavik in Iceland. In the final, she beat Sarah Jane Hampson of Great Britain 15-13 on points, said a press note here.
The Chennai woman had beaten another British fencer Jessica Corby 15-11 in the semifinal. The release said Bhavani Devi became the first In dian to win a gold medal in an international fencing event.
She now trains at the Sports Authority of India centre at Thalassery . “This is my third time in this competition. I have lost in quarterfinals in previous years. Now I have won my first medal. It is also the first medal in world level competition as I have won medals in Asian and Commonwealth championships,“ Bhavani said .
