Kolkata:Forward Bloc (FB), founded by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in 1939, has decided to drop the hammer and sickle from its official flag, seven decades after it had been introduced. The move is being read as a shift towards socialist, rather than communist, ideologies.


The party will retain the iconography of the yellow leaping tiger on a red background. The new flag will be raised on June 22, the party’s foundation day. Senior FB leaders said the flag’s “image makeover” would signal a focus on “Subhasism” — or Indian socialism— and a departure from the party’s commu- nist ideologies. “The hammer and sickle represented industrial and agricultural workers . But the symbols started losing their significance with the advancement.
