Briefly
Hamun-i-Lora is a salt lake located in the Sistan region of eastern Iran and western Afghanistan. It is one of the largest lakes in the region and has a surface area of approximately 5,000 square kilometers.
The coordinates of Hamun-i-Lora are approximately 31.50°N latitude and 62.00°E longitude.
The lake is fed by the Helmand River, which flows from Afghanistan into Iran. However, due to excessive water usage for agriculture and other purposes, as well as drought conditions, the river often dries up before reaching the lake. This has resulted in a significant decrease in the lake's water levels and an increase in its salinity.
The surrounding region is home to various ethnic groups, including Baloch, Pashtun, and Hazara. The lake and its surrounding wetlands are an important habitat for migratory birds, including flamingos, pelicans, and cranes, as well as other wildlife such as fish, reptiles, and mammals.
The lake has been the subject of various development projects, including plans for dam construction and irrigation schemes, which have raised concerns about the potential environmental impact on the lake and its surrounding ecosystem. In recent years, there have been efforts to promote sustainable management of the lake and its resources, including through the establishment of a biosphere reserve in the region.
