History

Kaushik Deka , Heavy metal group “India Today” 21/8/2017

Hindalco's first contribution to the vision of an industrial India came in 1962, when the late G.D. Birla set up India's first integrated aluminium facility at Renukoot, in eastern Uttar Pradesh. It was under the current chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, Kumar Mangalam Birla, that the business segments of aluminium and copper were consolidated to make Hindalco the non-ferrous metals powerhouse that it is today. This was achieved in part by inorganic growth through mergers and acquisitions with companies like Indian Aluminium Company Ltd and Birla Copper. Hindalco also secured copper reserves and amplified its operating base by acquiring Australian copper mines.

In 2007, the landmark overseas acquisition of Novelis Inc., the world's largest aluminium rolling company, placed Hindalco's footprint across the globe, securing it a rank amongst the top five global aluminium rolling mills. Novelis is a leading producer of flat-rolled aluminum products and the world's largest recycler of aluminum. It provides innovative solutions to the beverage can, automotive and high-end specialty markets.
