The man

Hrithik Roshan: Lesser known facts

The Times of India

No one can match Hrithik Roshan when it comes to looks, acting, dancing. It is said that Hrithik is the perfect package and rightly so. When he entered the film industry in 2000, he made everybody nervous and came into the limelight overnight. While Hrithik is a craze internationally too (amongst NRIs).

Before making his debut in Kaho Naa Pyaar in 2000, few known that Hrithik Roshan has been a child artist. The Greek god of Bollywood started young at the of six when his grandfather slyly cast the boy in the 1980 film Aasha where he danced on the film's sets without his knowledge. Duggu, as he's fondly called by his friends and family, then played a large role in Bhagwaan Dada (1986). The film starred mega stars Rajinikanth and Sri Devi. Hrithik played Rajni's adopted son in the film. Hrithik displayed his dance skills from this film itself and shared screen space with some of the biggest names in the industry. Hrithik's role was as big as his father's in Bhagwaan Dada and he played a pivotal role in the film.

His entire family belongs to the film and music industry. Hrithik's maternal grandfather was director-producer J. Om Prakash and his paternal grandfather was Roshan Lal Nagrath, a classical musician and famous composer. His paternal grandfather composed music for the movies in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Even Hrithik's paternal grandmother, Ira Nagrath/Ira Roshan, was a music composer. When Hrithik's grandfather died, it was she who completed composing the music for his unfinished film. His father, Rakesh Roshan, was a successful actor and his uncle Rajesh Roshan is also a music composer, who composed the music for Hrithik's debut film, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. He's also the grandnephew of director Mohan Kumar (Grandfather J Om Prakash's wife and Mohan Kumar's wife are sisters). Hrithik's estranged wife Sussanne Roshan is also the daughter of yesteryear actor Sanjay Khan who also became popular as Tipu Sultan, when he played the historical character on TV. Hrithik's entire family seems to be gifted.

Hrithik's obsession for acting started at a young age and to pursue his dream further, he turned down a degree at the presitgious UCLA college in the United States to learn the nuanes of film making, right from scratch. While assisting on family films, Hrithik would toil and often would sweep the floors and make tea for everybody on sets. But Hrithik remained undetered in his dream. The actor who had a major stammerign problem, was extremely thin, took up dancing lessons and even bodybuilding, in order to bulk up. He further took speech therapy classes to work on his stameering. Hrithik then debuted in 2000 with Amessha Patel in his father's production, Koi Mil Gaya. Originally, Kareena Kapoor was cast opposite him but due to some conflicts, she backed out. Kaho Naa Pyaar Hain went on to become one of the biggest hits of that year and Hrithik Roshan became a star overnight, giving sleepless nights to his contemporaries and predecessors.

But just as success came quickly, so did failure. In 2002, Hrithik gave back to back flops like Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage, Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, Mujhse Dosti Karoge! which he followed up with Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon in 2003. While most people had written him off, Hrithik went on to prove himself by focusing on solo projects. His home production, Koi... Mil Gaya, was India's first sci-fi film that saw Hrithik in a new avatar. It is said that after Hrithik's father Rakesh Roshan was shot by the mafia, Duggu wanted to quit films but changed his mind. Success followed him once again with films like Krrish, Dhoom 2 and Jodhaa Akbar. For Sanajy Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish, where he played a quadriplegic, Hrithik could not somewhere deal wirh the fact that the film had bombed at the box office. According to a report in Mid-Day, Hrithik apparently shelled out Rs 10.5 lakh to release a full-page ad in a daily that screamed 'Experience Ethan's magic.' The ad consisted of Hrithik's fans tweeting how they loved his performance in Guzaarish which failed at the Box Office.

Hrithik has a fondness for cats and the actor is also said to have a large heart. When terminally ill patients express their desire to meet Duggu, he always obliges. In 2000, when he made his debut with Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, the film broke all records and swept all the major awards that year. Since Hrithik had become an overnight sensation, his fan base increased and girls across the country were swooning for him. it is said that on Valentine's Day that year, he received 30000 marriage proposals. Hrithik who loves to perform his own stunts and has suffered many injuries during shoots was also diagnosed with Scoliosis when he was only 21. Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person's spine is curved from side to side and a person's spine appears as an S or ? Hrithik was told that he would not become an actor. But he proved everybody wrong. Hrithik is also known to be self obsessed. Whenever a celebrity guest is asked on Koffee with Karan what they would find in Hrithik's room or house, most reply with mirror or a life size poster. Even the industry knows that Duggu loves himself. It is said that the actor documents his daily life for many years by taking pictures and putting them in scrapbooks.

Hrithik's popularity is so much that he became the fifth Indian to have his life size statue at the prestigious MadameTussauds wax museum. According to reports, it was allegedly one of the most daring figures the museum ever created. According to Forbes India Celebrity 100 list (2013), Hrithik is ranked 10th on it, making him one of the most powerful stars to make it to the prestigious list. Not only that but further to the list, Hrithik's estimated earnings is Rs62.5 Crore as of 31st Oct'13. He makes money from endorsements and films. When Hrithik forayed into television to judge a dance reality show, he was allegedly paid 1.75 crore INR per episode. That's quite a lot but considering Hrithik's star status, it comes an no surprise. Was awarded the National Citizen's Award on August 25 2001 in Delhi which recognises excellence in various activities affecting national life.

Controversies

When Hrithik Roshan made headlines

The Times of India

Father Rakesh Roshan Hrithik Roshan has worked well with his father Rakesh Roshan in films like Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hain, Krrish, Krrish 3 and their movies have gone to become blockbusters. However, according to reports on Indiaglitz.com in March 2015, all was not well between the two as Hrithik is said to have walked out of his father's film, that is being produced by Abhinay Deo. Further to reports on Indiagltiz.com, Hrithik, who is very close to his family, has moved out of his father's apartment to a new house in Juhu, Mumbai. An insider revealed to Indiagltiz.com that the differences arose post Hrithik's split with Sussanne Khan. The main reason being that Hrithik was not happy with the inflated figures of Krrish 3 as he believed it would back fire. Here's a look at the other times when Bollywood's Greek God made headlines.

Hrithik Roshan's height-weight issues: Known as the Greek god of Bollywood, Hrithik has admitted that his height is 6 feet 2 inches, and his height and weight have been the topic of discussion. Many social media platforms cite Hrithik Roshan’s height as 5 feet 11 1/2 inches whereas his real height is 6 feet 2 inches. Many people are of the opinion that Hrithik Roshan uses lifters or high heeled shoes to increase his height. Talking about his weight, it keeps on fluctuating as per the need of his films. He gained weight for Krissh while he shed a lot of weight to fit in the character of Rohit in Koi Mil Gaya.

Aishwarya- Hrithik's kiss in Dhoom: Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai made a great pair in Dhoom 2 even before they starred in Ashutosh Gowarikar's Jodhaa Akbar. Their onscreen kiss in Dhoom 2 became a matter of controversy and it made headlines. The Bachchan family were apparently upset to see their bahu-to-be Aishwarya having a lip lock with Hrithik. If that was not all, reportedly Amitabh Bachchan requested Yash Raj Films to edit the kissing scene when Abhishek's engagement with Ash was announced a few weeks later.

Hrithik-Barbara Mori's alleged affair: Rakesh Roshan signed Mexican actress Barbara Mori to star in his film Kites. The day the cast started shooting for the film, the news of Hrithik-Barbara's closeness made headlines. Hrithik was linked with his co-star, Barbara since then. It started with the lip-lock that they shot for the film. While Basu wanted to retain it in the film, Rakesh Roshan decided to edit it out. According to rumours, there were quite a few steamy love scenes in the film as well. Reportedly, Roshan Sr. was asked to leave the sets during its shooting as Hrithik wasn't comfortable filming it with his father watching. Both Hrithik and Barbara were seen together hanging out at various events and destinations.

Sussanne- Hrithik's divorce: While most of them considered Hrithik Roshan- Sussanne's divorce as a cheap publicity, the golden couple of Bollywood separated, ending their 17 years of relationship (including 4 years of courtship). Speculations were rife with the news of their separation. Reportedly, the major reason behind their divorce was Hrithik's alleged affairs with his co-stars while others assume something else. This divorce chapter also raised another controversy that his estranged wife had asked for Rs 4 crore alimony. However Hrithik and Sussanne both denied the reports and clarified that their divorce took place without any issues, either monetary or custody.

Hrithik-Kareena affair: Hrithik and Kareena were paired opposite each other for the first time in Yaadein, and apparently romance blossomed since then. However, Hrithik went on to marry his childhood sweetheart Sussanne. He continued to act with Kareena in films like Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. But their closeness soon got to Sussanne, and father Rakesh Roshan apparently instructed Hrithik not to work with Kareena again. Since then, the two have never worked together. Hrithik and Kareena were supposed to act in Zoya Akhtar's film, Kismet Talkies. The film, however, never took off.

The love story

Hrithik (born 1974) once told The Times of India that he had known since he was twelve that Sussanne was the girl for him. They moved among the same circle of friends while they were growing up in Juhu , but at the time Hrithik was too shy to confess his feelings for her and was simply content to adore her from a distance.

Eventually Sussanne went abroad and Hrithik stayed back to chase his celluloid dreams. Then one day, while waiting at a traffic signal, he turned and locked eyes with a pretty girl at the wheel of the car next to him. It was Sussane. So thunderstruck was the young man by this momentous development in his life that he insisted it be recreated on screen in his debut film, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai.

Older and more confident, especially after the film's humongous success, he now started pursuing Sussane in earnest. On Valentine's Day, he told her of his love and exactly a year later he went down on his knees on Juhu beach and proposed to Sussane in true schmaltzy Valentine Day spirit.

First signs of trouble

The couple had two sons and seemed well on their way to being that rarity in Bollywood: a happy couple. In 2011 even as newspapers were buzzing about a certain Mexican seductress, Sussane Roshan publicly declared her love for Hrithik on stage at an awards ceremony in Singapore leaving Hrithik look misty-eyed.

He was again overwhelmed when he stepped into her interiors shop one month later, on February 27, tears visible. "For 15 years, she has supported me in my career. Now I want to be her pillar and punching board," he was quoted as saying in an interview then.

In Dec 2013 Bollywood's golden couple Hrithik and Sussanne Roshan have decided to end their 17-year-long relationship. Hrithik announced the split from his wife in a terse statement released from Los Angeles where the star was vacationing solo. It left no ambiguity about who had left whom.

"Sussanne has decided to separate from me and end our 17-year-long relationship," he wrote about the end of his fairytale marriage before assuring his fans that he still had "faith in the institution of marriage."

While the announcement came as a shock to his legions of fans, Bollywood insiders were not exactly unaware of the trouble brewing in the relationship. Sussanne had moved out of the family home in Juhu with their two sons about four months ago but the separation was kept a secret as the Roshans did not want anything to divert attention from Krissh 3, the child-friendly family franchise.

Sources cite several reasons why a reconciliation does not seem possible, one of which is Sussanne's terminal boredom with her husband who, she felt, had become obsessed with his career and his undeniable good looks. The wife felt neglected.

While rumours of an open marriage has been dodging the couple for some time with names of other equally beautiful people like Barbara Mori and Arjun Rampal adding to a sizzling narrative of a marriage unraveling, the final nail comes in the form of a rather mundane familial trouble: saas-bahu friction.

Friends of the couple close to the development told this newspaper that Sussanne wanted Hrithik to move out of the family home Palazzio in Juhu but the star was not keen to leave his parents and his divorced sister. Not that Sussanne had to share a small flat with caviling in-laws. The couple had their own independent floor but the escalating tensions between the bahu and the in-laws would not be contained in that building, and culminated with a blazing row between Sussane and Pinky Mum-in-law Roshan some days ago leading to this denouncement.

The Times of India's source says, "The marriage has had it's share of ups and downs in the past when Hrithik was linked to his Kites costar Barbara Mori. Sussanne had moved into a plush five-star hotel in the vicinity saying that their home was infested with termites. But she went back home that time after Barbara returned to Mexico. But this time the cracks went deeper, particularly after their friendship with another star couple turned sour."

Why did Hrithik-Sussanne split?

Reasons that might have led to Hrithik-Sussanne divorce

The Times of India

Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne have been childhood friends, who later got married. A few days before their 13th wedding anniversary, Hrithik announced that Sussanne had decided to end their 17 years long relationship. The first reason to emerge for the separation was about Hrithik. Reports were rife that the relationship was on the rocks because of Duggu's alleged affairs. Hrithik was romantically linked to his co-star from Kites - Barbara Mori. At that time too Sussanne has moved to her parent's home, but was back with Duggu after some time. Before that Hrithik Roshan was said to be in love with his co-star Kareena Kapoor.

The most shocking alleged reason for the divorce was when reports stated that Sussanne Roshan was into substance abuse. According to a report on Sahara Samay, drug abuse played the major reason in the couple filing a divorce. Close family friends made efforts to bring the couple back. Reports also states that Sussanne was feeling bored with Hrithik Roshan who concentrated only on his career. The wife reportedly felt neglected and used to party alone. For those close to the couple, the news of the divorce has not come as a surprise. Reportedly the duo was already toying with the idea of getting separated. They have two children, Hridhaan Roshan and Hrehaan, who are with Hrithik.

While Hrithik was said to have many affairs, Sussanne was also reported to be getting close to another male pal. Reports state that the apparent split was because Sussanne Roshan was getting close to another Bollywood hero, Arjun Rampal. However, Arjun and his wife issued a statement saying, “Mehr and I wish them only peace and love through these times, and support them as friends should and we wish them and their families well, always. It is very sad when friends close to you take a decision to separate. These are the hardest times for them and we must be sensitive towards this decision, rather than creating speculation and rumours.” Arjun has been a good friend of the couple and even after the apparent split, Sussanne-Arjun and his wife Mehr were spotted at a late night party.

Hrithik and Sussanne were both reported to have affairs, but there was another reason probed in this split. Rumour mills were abuzz with news that Sussanne's mother in law, Pinky Roshan was the reason for the couple heading for a divorce. Reportedly Pinky Roshan was not on good terms with Sussane, and the two were tired of each other. Because of the friction between the saas-bahu, Sussanne had reportedly insisted on living separately, However this was not an option for Duggu and hence the divorce was into process

Rs400 crore alimony?

According to July 2014 reports (The Times of India), Sussanne Roshan demanded around Rs 400 crores from Hrithik Roshan as alimony after filing for divorce.

However clarifying the same, official sources state that there is no truth in it.

Hrithik tweeted, "Fabricated news articles. Demeaning my loved ones. Testing my patience." The Times of India

The Times of India

Hrithik Roshan continues to remain a favourite with Sussanne Khan's family.

Not only is he an integral part of birthday and festival celebrations in his estranged wife's home; on his part, he makes it a point to wish each of Sussanne's siblings, her cousins and her parents on their birthdays.

Inspirations from Hrithik’s life

Hrithik Roshan: 7 Lessons we learn from his life

The Times of India

While Hrithik is considered as one of the most bankable stars in the industry, at heart he is still a simple man who loves his work and family. Just like his on-screen characters Hrithik is an inspiration for many in his real life too. Let's take a look at lessons we have learnt from Hrithik Roshan's life.

Determination to overcome difficulties: During his childhood days Hrithik Roshan suffered from a major stammering problem. In an interview with The Times of India, he revealed that as a kid he used to be teased by students and neighbours. "Everything seems normal till you start talking. The minute you start talking, you get stuck and you don't know why? Right from your toes to the ends of your hair strands, you are in complete shock. Your heart palpitates, you don't understand and you are aware of people looking at you. You can compare it to hell," he said. But Hrithik being the man that he is, was determined to overcome this challenge. He started taking extensive speech therapy sessions and used to practice for hours altogether. He added that there were moments when he felt that he could not overcome this problem but with such supportive parents by his side and a strong will, he finally overcame it.

Humility: Rakesh Roshan was a superstar. His children also enjoyed the 'celebriy kids' status but the fact that his father was a well known man never made Hrithik take things for granted. It is his sheer hard work and dedication that has got him to where he is today. Even though he came from a well known family, the actor never misused his family name. While he was assisting his dad on their home production, Hrithik never shied away from sweeping floors. The actor never threw starry tantrums and wanted to understand all aspects of film making and production.

Fight Adversities: During the shooting of 'Bang Bang' last year, while practising a dance move Hrithik hurt his head and started getting headaches often. He got a CT scan done which showed nothing so he started taking painkillers to subside the pain but to no avail. It kept increasing and Hrithik again went for a CT scan which showed a blood clot in his brain. Even though he used to get severe headaches he never missed shooting. Not only was he always on time but the actor never got irritated even if the shoot was delayed. And soon after his treatment, the actor resumed shooting.

Doting Dad: Hrithik Roshan is known to be a doting dad and is often pictured spending time with them and doing fun things. In an interview with The Times of India, Hrithik said, "Hrehaan and Hridhaan are pure angels and pure delight. Unfortunately, they are not naughty and that keeps me a little concerned as I too, was not naughty as a kid. I am now trying to push them out to do things. They are too special and beautiful and being around them is such a great opportunity to contribute to them. I love playing a father."

Loyal Friend: Hrithik has proved that he is indeed the kind of friend one can ask for. The actor is very close to Farhan Akhtar, Uday Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan. Not only does he stand by them during their tough times but also respects them for the kind of individuals they are. While Bollywood is a place where budding friendships and tussles always makes headlines, Hrithik has stayed loyal and true to his friends.

Never Say Never: After the roaring success of his debut film 'Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai' (KNPH), Hrithik Roshan became an overnight star. The media tagged him as the next big thing in Bollywood. But unfortunately many of his films after KNPH did not do so well at the box office. High expectations from the star and the success of his debut film put him under a lot of pressure. One of the leading magazines even published his photo on their cover page and tagged him as 'finished'. While others could have given up under such circumstance, Hrithik bounced back and gave India its first sci- fi film 'Koi Mil Gaya'. The rest as they say, is history!
