Skewed sex ratio may do the impossible

Sukhbir Siwach | TNN

Chandigarh: Despite khap diktats, there’s a growing feeling among the Jats that the gotra norms should be relaxed because the community is facing a major crisis in finding suitable alliances.

Taking a lead, the Maliks, the largest gotra of Jats, have already relaxed two conditions out of about a dozen restrictions about choice of a partner, because Haryana is witnessing a skewed sex ratio. Now, the people related with other gotras are lining up to relax the gotra norms.

It was the toughest task for the Maliks to find the alliances when its community members left eight gotras; four from girl’s side and another four from the boy’s side. First, they relaxed the condition of parental grandmother’s gotra. Around five years back, a social panchayat in Rohtak agreed upon the relaxations of the Maliks.‘‘We are now feeling relaxed,’’ said Baljeet Singh Malik, president of Gathwala khap. Now, people of the gotra leave just two gotras: those of mother and father of both the boy and the girl.

However, a large section of Jats still leaves six gotras while making matrimonial alliances. ‘‘Keeping in view the new challenges, we have suggested to all khaps that gotra norms be relaxed like our khap did long back,’’ said Malik. ‘‘The gotra condition of mother and father, which is called ‘doodh aur khun ka rishta will be sufficient while making the alliances,’’ said a khap leader.
