Jhulan now leading wicket-taker in women's ODIs, May 10, 2017: The Times of India

Former India captain Jhulan Goswami on Tuesday became the highest wicket-taker in women's ODI cricket. The 34-year-old right-arm pacer achieved this feat, overtaking retired Australian seamer Cathryn Fitzpatrick's career haul of 180 with a three-wicket haul against South Africa women in the ongoing quadrangular series at Potchefstroom.

Jhulan now has 181 wickets in 153 matches at an average of 21.76 and an even more impressive economy rate of 3.18. The pacer, who had missed the Women's World Cup Qualifying tournament in February due to a shoulder injury, had picked one wicket against Ire land in the first match. Her late strikes helped India bundle out South Africa for a paltry 119. Reeling at 113 for six, the home team lost their last four wickets for just six runs as Jhulan sent back Nadine de Klerk, Masabata Klaas and Raisibe Ntozakh in quick succession to wrap up the innings and go past Fitzpatrick.

India went on to win the match by seven wickets with skipper Mithali Raj making an unbeaten 51. Indian eves had earlier defeated Ireland by 10 wickets.

The Padma Shri awardee from Chakdah in West Bengal's Nadia district, is currently third in the ICC women's rankings for ODI bowlers and has been a regular fixture in the senior women's team since making here international debut in 2002. The Arjuan awardee was also named ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year in 2007.

Jhulan has 40 wickets from ten Test matches. Her most memorable performance came in the 2006 Test series against England as her match-haul of 1078 at Leicester helped India beat England women for the first time on their soil.

Jhulan who has 271 international scalps to her credit (Tests-40, ODIs-181 and T20I-50), is also the all-time leading wicket-taker in women's cricket.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was among the first to laud Jhulan's feat. “Congratulations to Jhulan Goswami for becoming the top wicket-taker in Women's ODIs #cricket We are proud of you!“ the CM tweeted on he of ficial Twitter handle @ MamataOfficial.
