PADMA SHRI FOR PARA WARRIOR VENKATESH
Bengaluru: He was born with Achondroplasia, a growth disorder which causes dwarfism, but KY Venkatesh never allowed it to come in the way of his sporting dreams. The 50-yearold multifaceted parasports exponent has been chosen for the Padma Shri for his contribution in his field.
His height — 4ft 2 inches — was hardly a deterrent as Venkatesh made his foray into sports in 1994. For almost two decades he represented the state and the country at various national and international meets in athletics and badminton. He was the first athlete to represent India at the World Dwarf Games.
After retiring as an athlete, Venkatesh decided to contribute to parasports as an administrator.
Venkatesh, who comes from a family of businessmen and continues to juggle work and sports, said, “The award is yet to sink in. While I have applied in the past for the Padma Shri, this year I hadn’t applied for it because I thought the preference will understandably be for Covid-19 warriors. I was pleasantly surprised when I was informed about the honour.”
Besides Venkatesh, veteran table tennis player Mouma Das, P Anitha, Madhavan Nambiar, Sudha Hari Narayan Singh and Virender Singh have also been chosen for the award in the field of sports.
