Kakraia

Town in the Dataganj tahsil of Budaun District, United Provinces, situated in 27 degree 53' N. and 79 degree 12' E., 12 miles south of Budaun town. Population (1901), 5,954. The name is said to have been derived from kankar or nodular limestone, which is largely found in the neighbourhood. In April, 1858, General Penny defeated near Kakrala. a party of Ghazis or fanatical Musalmans, who were lying in ambush for him. This victory put an end to the rebel government which had ruled at Budaun for eleven months. The town contains a sarai, and a branch of the American Methodist Mission. It is administered under Act XX of 1856, with an income of about Rs. 1,000. The primary school has 75 pupils.
