Dress code

As in 2020

Rajeev Dikshit , January 13, 2020: The Times of India

VARANASI: For 'sparsh-darshan' (offering prayer by touching Jyotirlinga), the Kashi Vishwanath temple administration in Varanasi will soon introduce a dress code.

After seeking suggestions from Vidvat Parishad, (council of scholars) UP minister of state (independent charge) for religious affairs Neelkanth Tiwari asked temple authorities also to increase timing for sparsh-darshan for those who will come in dhoti-kurta and sari.

The meeting of minister and divisional commissioner Deepak Agrawal with veteran scholars had taken place on Sunday late evening when suggestions were sought over provisions of sparsh-darshan to introduce at the temple.

Sparsh-darshan was in practice at this temple for centuries. But in view of Shrawan month's crowd in 2019 it was stopped. After the end of Shrawan month, the temple administration avoided restarting it, which led to resentment among devotees. It compelled temple authorities to restart it, although it was started for two-three hours only.

In view of sentiment of devotees, the temple authorities were searching ways to find out a permanent solution as in view of huge crowding allowing all visitors to offer sparsh-darshan was impossible.

After getting suggestions from scholars, minister asked commissioner to initiate necessary measures for early introduction of dress code for sparsh-darshan.
