Kotagiri
Kotagiri, 1908
Hill station and planting centre in the Coonoor taluk of the Nllgiri District, Madras, situated in 11° 26' N. and 76 degree 52' E., at the north-east of the Nllgiri plateau, 18 miles from Ootacamund and 12 from Coonoor. Population (1901), 5,100. The tahsildar of Coonoor holds fortnightly criminal sittings here. The station was founded in 1830, and has grown but slowly. Its climate is preferred by many to that of Ootacamund, as it is warmer and less exposed to the south-west monsoon. It is connected with Mettupalaiyam on the plains in Coimbatore by a good road, 20 miles in length, with a uniform gradient of 1 in 18. The abandoned military sanitarium of Dimhatti lies just outside its limits. The Basel Mission has a station here.

Note: National, provincial and district boundaries have changed considerably since 1908. Typically, old states, ‘divisions’ and districts have been broken into smaller units, and many tahsils upgraded to districts. Some units have since been renamed. Therefore, this article is being posted mainly for its historical value.
