Jnanpith awardee, eminent Hindi writer Krishna Sobti dies at 93 January 26, 2019: The Times of India


Born in 1925, Sobti was known for writing about issues of female identity and sexuality. “Mitro Marjani”, “Zindaginama” and “Surajmukhi Andhere Ke” were some of her famous works.

She received prestigious awards like Sahitya Akademi, Jnanpith and was also offered Padma Bhushan, which she had declined.

Author-poet Ashok Vajpeyi said she was the “trustee of Indian democracy” through her contribution to literature. “What she has done for Indian literature is unmatched. Her social message was very clear through her work,” he said. Ashok Maheshwari, a friend and managing director of Rajkamal Prakashan, said.

“Krishna ji was one of the most sensitive and alert writers of our times. She created her own identity and dignity in the field of literature,” he said. Her latest book “Channa” was launched at New Delhi WorldBookFair on January 11. “It was actually her first novel, written 60 years ago. But due to some disagreement it was never published,” he informed.

Eminent Hindi author and essayist Krishna Sobti died Jan 2019 in Delhi, family sources said. She was 93.

Krishna Sobti to receive 2017 Jnanpith, November 4, 2017: The Times of India

 Renowned Hindi litterateur Krishna Sobti will be awarded this year's Jnanpith, the award's selection board announced.

Born in 1925, Sobti, was known for experimenting with new writing styles and creating “bold“ and “daring“ characters. “Sobti was a path-breaking novelist. She has immensely enriched Hindi literature,“ the the Jnanpith selection board, chaired by noted scholar, writer and critic Namwar Singh, said in a statement.

Her choice of subjects ranges from Partition to relationships between men and womans. Her celebrated works include `Daar Se Bichhudi', `Mitro Marjani', and `Zindaginama'. Several have been translated to other Indian languages, as well as Swedish, Russian and English.
