A backgrounder

Lasalgaon is located in Nashik District in the state of Maharashtra. This place and the surroundings have the climatic conditions which are suitable for the cultivation of the Onion crop. Moreover, Lasalgaon has a railway station which is from a quite old time and hence onions are easily marketable and transportable from Lasalgaon. And therefore, the Asia’s largest Onion market was established in the town. Also Bhabha Atomic Research Center which was established in Turbhe (Mumbai) has got its only and second center in the town of Lasalgaon for improving the quality and making them marketable for the purpose of export, which is nowadays also proving to be of great help in the export of mangoes as well.

Lasalgaon is a town where all the agricultural villages are located nearby . Therefore farmers sell their yield here at onion market for good prices (For knowledge Lasalgaon has biggest onion market in Asia) . There are many import and export business of onions in Lasalgaon . This is the reason why Lasalgaon is famous for onions .

The Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in the district, which is the largest wholesale onion market in the country, is also known as a price trend setter for other onion mandis in the country.

The onion prices in Lasalgaon are reflected in other mandis across the country. Lasalgaon is not only country's largest wholesale onion market, but it is the market that sets the price trend of onions in manids across the country.

Speaking to TOI, R P Gupta, Director, National Horticulture Research and Development Foundation (NHRDF) said, "Lasalgaon market is the leading and largest wholesale onion market in the country. The onion prices in Lasalgaon are reflected in other mandis in the country."

Nanasaheb Patil, director, the National Agricultural Co-operative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED), said, "The Lasalgaon is the old wholesale onion market of the country. The trader class is large here and they are active in onion trading in national and international markets. There are also big exporters at Lasalgaon, who export onions from here. Hence, Lasalgaon has created its base in the market. Hence, the onion prices in Lasalgaon are followed by other mandis of the country."

Maharashtra shares 40 per cent of total onion production in the country. Nashik contributes 80 per cent of total onion production of the state. The onion from Nashik is famous not only in the country, but also in the world due to its different taste and durability. The people know the Nashik's onion by taste.

The onions grown in Nashik, particularly in and around Lasalgaon, has huge demand as compared to the onion grown in other states of the country. Onion (Allium cepa) is one of the important commercial vegetable crops grown in India. It is widely grown in different parts of the country mainly by small and marginal farmers. It is used as salad or cooked in various ways in all curries, fried, boiled or baked. Onions are used in processed forms e.g. flakes, powder paste, pickles etc. It has very good medicinal value. Nutritive value of onion varies from variety to variety. Small sized onions are more nutritive than big ones. Its major value is in its flavour. Onion ranks medium in calorific value, low in protein and very low in vitamins.
