M A M Ramaswamy once controlled one of business empires the biggest business empires in Chennai
In recent months, the `Raja of Chettinad', as he was called, had been involved in an acrimonious and bitterly fought feud with his adopted son and sole heir M A M R Muthiah, managing director of the Chettinad Group.
In June 2015, he publicly disowned his adopted son and started a legal process to annul Muthiah's adoption. He also set about creating trusts to secure the family assets outside the Chettinad businesses under the supervision of his cousin, former BCCI president and SPIC promoter A C Muthiah. Ramaswamy had made the dramatic declaration, “my son will kill me any moment,“ shortly after disowning him.
Acknowledged as a community leader of the Chettiars, Ramaswamy , the grandson of merchant prince Raja Sir Annamalai, upheld the family tradition of philanthropy through a number of schools and hospitals. His other illustrious cousin is former finance minister P Chidambaram.
