Magic: black- and other

As in 2022

Precious Rongmei, June 7, 2022: The Times of India

Mayong village is commonly known as the centre for black magic, witchcraft and necromancy. It is not an urban legend, Mayong's history has been told and retold for generations.

Who would’ve thought that the small village of Mayong by the Brahmaputra river, in Morigaon district, hugged by the lush forest of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, could also carry around a history dark enough to send chills down your spine?

Yes, Mayong village is commonly known as the centre for black magic, witchcraft and necromancy. It is not an urban legend, Mayong’s history has been told and retold for generations.

The thing about Mayong is, the dark arts are not a thing of the past. It is still practised by some of the residents, and this knowledge will get passed down to generations. Local Assamese folklore has mentions of Mayong and its practice of black magic. Even in Mahabharata, one will find things about Mayong’s dark arts. Something to do with Mayong once being the home of Tantra Kriya, perhaps?

For those who find the subject of dark arts fascinating, Mayong is gold. No wonder, even with the history of witchcraft, human sacrifice and all things sorcery, Mayong is a very popular tourist destination.

Did I mention human sacrifice? During the archaeological excavations, many tools such as swords and what looked like tools that were used during human sacrifice rituals in other parts of the country, were unearthed. Not something that would stop a curious traveller now, is it?

The people of Mayong have so many stories to tell, stories of how people just vanished into thin air, how people turned into animals and vice versa, casting spells on people so that the root of the problem gets “cleared”, and then, there is also the practice of Ayurveda for a number of ailments. Don’t believe me? Go, and ask them yourself.

When in Mayong, you must visit the Mayong Central Museum and Emporium. Here, you will find ancient manuscripts of black magic and Ayurveda.

Somehow, after all this, even the fact that Mayong is surrounded by the beautiful forest of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the Indian elephant and the great one-horned rhinoceros, seems so mediocre. But it is true; visit Mayong for an awesome wildlife experience too.
