Pulimurugan (2016) broke the record set by another Mohanlal-starrer, 'Drishyam', which has grossed over Rs 70 crore.

Pulimurugan, directed by Vysakh became the first Malayalam film to collect Rs 100 crore. Mohanlal plays the eponymous hero in the film centred on man-animal conflict.

The film which was released in over 200 theatres across 80 release centres in the state has maintained a steady run, coughing up crores every day.

The film grossed Rs 4.5 crore on the opening day and never dipped to a low except for a nominal slump on the second day, when the collection dropped to Rs 4.2 crore.

The collection frog-leaped, pocketing Rs 26.41 crore in seven days, according to industry sources. It also recorded the biggest initial for any Malayalam cinema, collecting Rs 12.9 crore in the first three days.

‘Except for two places in Kerala, all the centres had 2-3 theatres exhibiting this film continuously for a month. It is unheard of for any other films," said M C Bobby, vice-president, Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce.

Industry sources said that the film raked in Rs 13.8 crore from its screening in the Middle East, which added to the momentum in collection. Besides, the rights for overseas distribution, satellite, audio and video together marshalled another Rs 15 crore.

The stupendous returns from the film meant that theatre owners ran a tight-packed schedule for a month. "We ran six shows a day in three theatres in the initial week. We have registered 85% occupancy on working days and 100% on weekends. Considering the rush, we start our show at 8.30pm instead of 9.30pm so that the final show could begin by 11.30pm," said Visakh Subrahmaniam, owner of New Theatre, Sreekumar and Sreevisakh theatres. The film touched Rs 1 crore in these theatres [in its fourth week].

In 2016, till November, Mohanlal churned out hits like Janatha Garage, Oppam and Pulimurugan.
