Mumbai: Seven years after welcoming eight Humboldt penguins from South Korea, the Byculla zoo is set to exchange a pair of the aquatic birds with animals/birds from other zoos in the country. The number of penguins in the city zoo has risen to 15.


In a letter to the Hyderabad zoo listing out the animals and birds it has in excess and that are available for exchange, the Mumbai zoo has mentioned a male and a female penguin among others. In return it requires golden jackal, Indian black turtle, marsh crocodile and common peafowl, all of which are in excess in Hyderabad. 


Mumbai zoo officials said they are ready to extend their exchange programme with any zoo across the country.

The Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Vanaspati Udyan (Ranibaugh) and zoo at Byculla currently has 15 penguins, of which, three male and five female penguins were brought from Coex Aquarium, Seoul in South Korea on July 26, 2016.

According to the zoo officials after receiving a list of surplus animals at Nehru Zoological Park, they made a proposal for an exchange programme by sparing animals they either have on donation basis or in exchange of the surplus animals.

Dr Sanjay Tripathi, director at VJBB Udyan and zoo said all the animals/birds they are offering for exchange are in good health and are of breedable age. “The animal exchange can take place only if the concerned zoo has all the required facilities to house the animals/birds. For penguins we have air handling units, clean air circulation, chillers, CCTV cameras for 24/7 monitoring of the penguins, veterinarians, ani- mal keepers and engineers. All this will be required by the zoo to which we give the penguins for exchange. ”

The other animals/birds that the Byculla zoo has listed for exchange are Rhesus Macaque male (4) and female (4), Barking Deer male (2) and female (2), Wild Boar female (1), Cockatiel Grey male (3) and female (3), Cockatiel White male (3) and female (3), Parakeet Alexandrine male (2) and female (2).

However, the Byculla zoo authorities have clarified that not just the Zoological Park in Hyderabad, but they are ready to extend their animal exchange programme with any other zoo across the country, provided it has the required infrastructure to maintain the animals/birds and ensures to keep them in good health.
