Railway network, suburban
Commuter fatalities, 2016-19 (anecdotal)
Nitasha Natu, June 28, 2019: The Times of India
In a record of sorts, no commuter death was reported on Mumbai’s suburban railway network.
The city’s lifeline, which ferries eight million commuters sees 6-10 fatalities daily. Activists said improved infrastructure and closing of gaps in boundary walls have brought about a reduction in deaths and such efforts should continue. However, 11 commuters were injured in rail mishaps on Wednesday. Track-crossing has been the biggest killer. On September 8, 2016, 18 fatalities were reported in a day, which was the most ever in a 24-hour span.
GRP had carried out an audit of locations where multiple unauthorised entry/exit points were resulting in people crossing tracks. Gaps at over 100 locations were closed on Central Railways in the last six months. Joint teams of GRP, RPF and engineering personnel inspected the locations and certified them. On Western Railway, gaps were closed at 52 spots and around 9 km of walls were constructed.
