Bollywood lyricist Munna Dhiman had given up the dream and slunk back to Chandigarh from Mumbai back in 2003, when he received a one-line response to a cold e-mail he'd sent filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj. "One day, we will work together," wrote the director known for Maqbool and Haider. A month later, Bhardwaj asked Dhiman to write three songs for his album Aasma (2004). "We had never met. While recording one of the songs, I could not recognise him. Someone pointed him out to me," Dhiman recalls.
The son of a Punjab roadways conductor who studied at a Hindi-medium school in Chandigarh, Dhiman lives with a severe curvature of the spine, which inhibits his movements but hasn't slowed his career. Since that first note from Bhardwaj, he has penned lyrics for some 50 songs featured in 15 different films-even though he has never moved back to Mumbai since his return to Punjab nearly 15 years ago.
"Just because I am differently-abled and come from a simple background does not mean that I have achieved something exceptional," says Dhiman, who has resisted calls from music directors to move to India's film capital. "I like the pace of life here, it allows my words to come at their natural pace."
