A brief biography

Nov 8, 2019: The Times of India

Poet, novelist and academic Nabaneeta Dev Sen was born on January 13, 1938, to two illustrious intellectuals, poets — Narendra Dev and Radharani Devi. She was christened by Rabindranath Tagore.

She received the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Padmashree, but much before she took to writing creatively, she chose to pursue academics with dogged perseverance, first graduating from Presidency College and then doing a master’s from Jadavpur University. She did a masters in Harvard University followed by a PhD from Indiana University. She also did a post-doctoral research at the University of California at Barkeley and Newnham College, Cambridge University.

She graduated with a master’s degree in 1958 and married economist Amartya Sen next year. The couple had two daughters, Antara Dev Sen and Nandana Sen, before they divorced in 1976. Amartya Sen said: “We have been divorced for 45 years but we remained in touch. I have pleasant memories ...We were also linked through our two daughters. Nabaneeta had extraordinary talent. Her absence will be felt.” TNN
