Amateur historian Dhanpaul assisted in discovering the 15th-century stone inscription at Nadupalli in Kolar taluk. The inscription details the donation of a Garuda Kambha to a Vaishnava temple. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Dhanpaul in Mann Ki Baat for his efforts in preserving heritage.
Historian and retired joint director of collegiate education KRNarasimhan and amateur historian Dhanpaul have unearthed a huge 15th-century stone pillar inscription at Nadupalli in Kolar taluk. The inscription has details of 'kambha seve' (pillar donation to a Vaishnavaite temple). Villagers of Nadupalli noticed the pillar lying near a temple.
Govindappa, a villager, noticed some inscription on the pillar and sought the help of Narasimhan to decipher the same.
Narasimhan, along with his associate Dhanpaul, visited the village and with the help of locals, they lifted the pillar and cleaned its surface.
On the pillar were found eight lines in Kannada script and they read that one Garuda Kambha (usually positioned in front of temples) was donated to Tirumala, the presiding deity of the temple, by one Arasale, son of Arasale Bhamoja on Friday, the 4th of Oct 1442. The religious symbols of Chakra, Conch, Nama and Garuda were found on the pillar. Narasimhan said the stone pillar was a Garuda Kambha belonging to Vaishnava temple.
Narasimhan described the writings in detail to the villagers who later decided to offer pooja to it and erect the same in front of the village temple.
He said many inscriptions have been unearthed in these areas but not like the one that was found at Nadupalli. "It's quite unique because it is a vertical inscription while most of the stone inscriptions found in Kolar and other places were horizontal."
He said one horizontal stone inscription was recently found near Doddajala in Devanahalli taluk of Bengaluru Rural district in the last week of April and steps have been taken to preserve it in front of the village temple.
The inscription which describes land donation dates back to Sept 18, 1407, said Narasimhan.
Who is Dhanpaul?
Dhanpaul is a retired BMTC driver turned amateur historian, and his penchant to unearth age-old inscriptions was mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Mann Ki Baat some eight months back. Modi said youngsters should draw inspiration from Dhanpaul and contribute to the upkeep of our heritage.
